Goals of the Programme
Metallurgical Engineering is concerned with the development, production, and processing of ferrous, non-ferrous, and mineral materials. It is the basis for innovative products and new technological developments in the fields of industry, technology, and medicine. Research in this department focuses on materials design. It includes general research to ascertain the structure of and opportunities for optimising known materials (e.g. steel, aluminium, magnesium, glass, ceramic, etc.). Scientists in this division also deal with issues relating to surface technology, recycling, manufacturing, and processing using state-of-the-art production processes including quality assurance inspections.

General Description of the Programme

The programme provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of metallurgical engineering. Its particular focus is on industrial R&D practices and modern manufacturing processes. The programme aims at enhancing the students’ ability to design and manage projects and to lead and co-ordinate project teams.

This programme focuses on all disciplines within Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Technology. At the beginning of their studies, students have to select their individual area of specialism:

  • Process Technology of Metals
  • Physical Metallurgy and Materials
  • Material Science of Mineral Materials
  • Materials Science of Steels

Formal Entrance Requirements

  • A candidate should have a recognised first degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in Metallurgy, or Materials Engineering, or other closely related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognised university-level institution.
  • Applicants must have a proof of their English language skills (TOEFL 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based; IELTS 6.0).
  • Candidates should have performed above average in their undergraduate studies.

Special Entrance Requirements
Students should have an interest in continuing their careers in the field of metallurgy or material science. The programme is appropriate for both engineers coming from industry and from university. Candidates should be able to apply their knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems, as well as to set up and perform experiments in a laboratory setting.

Structure of the programme
At the beginning of the programme, students will choose one of the areas of specialism offered as their individual study focus. The choice of the specialisation determines  six basic courses from a catalogue (Thermochemistry, Physical Metallurgy, Transport Phenomena, Process Control Engineering, Fabrication Technology of Metals, Mineral Materials, Metallic Materials, Process Metallurgy and Recycling, and Fabrication Technology of Mineral Materials), and the study majors.

The programme offers a choice of four areas of specialism:

Process Technology of Metals

  • Melt Treatment and Continuous Casting
  • Unit Operations in Nonferrous Metallurgy
  • Casting Processes and Casting Alloys
  • Fundamentals and Solving Methods in Metal Forming
  • Industrial Furnaces

Physical Metallurgy and Materials

  • Advanced Physical Metallurgy
  • Introduction to Texture Analysis
  • Micromechanics of Materials
  • Comprehensive Physical Metallurgy Lab

Material Science of Mineral Materials

  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Functional Design of Ceramics and Composites
  • Thermochemical & Dynamical Materials Modelling Concepts

Materials Science of Steels

  • Materials Science of Steels
  • Introduction to Texture Analysis
  • Materials Characterisation
  • Physical Metallurgy Lab

The programme is complemented by

  • a complementary course (German language course).
  • a ten-week internship
  • a study-integrated thesis of about six weeks
  • a six-month Master’s thesis in which students are challenged to solve practical problems in the area of their chosen specialisation. During this thesis the candidates are integrated in RWTH research teams.

Career Opportunities
Metallurgical engineers work in a multitude of fields within industry, including research and development, design, production planning, sales and distribution, quality management, and organisation. The programme awards students a M.Sc. degree, which is well recognised around the world.

Note
Admission/rejection letters will be send out in April/May at the earliest.
