Textile Reinforced Concrete

Department of Building Construction and Design
Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Hartwig Schneider

Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is an innovative composite material made from a concrete matrix and textile reinforcement by glass or carbon, which permits the production of extremely light and slender components. Beyond that the flexible reinforcement makes it possible to create free forms and geometries.
In order to ensure a good bonding behavior between textile reinforcement and the surrounding concrete matrix, very free-flowing fine-grained concretes with a maximum grain size of 1 mm are used for TRC.
Within the Collaborative Research Center SFB 532 “Textile Reinforced Concrete – Basics for an Innovative Technology” the Chair of Building Construction and Design, in interdisciplinary cooperation with various institutes of the RWTH Aachen University, is involved with research on numerous aspects – from the scientific basic principles to questions on the application and design of TRC.
The Chair of Building Construction and Design is concerned with the exploration of the capabilities of the new building material in architecture, the exemplary development of components made of TRC and the investigation of construction and design principles.
Accompanying the research activities at the Department, smaller design tasks have been developed with the students as prototype studies in several seminars.
