I would like to switch to a degree program at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. How many semesters can be accredited due to my previous studies?
Upon switching to one of our degree programs no full semesters will be accredited. With an application for accreditation application for accredtion you can apply for accreditation of your previous academic performances after your enrollment. Performances which are equivalent to a module of your new degree program will ex officio be accredited. Here, your modules will be accredited individually. You will receive your degree after you successfully completed all module exams according to the study curriculum which applies to you. It is irrelevant in which semester you pass the respective exams. Module exams can be taken in any order; however, only the standard curriculum is collision free.
How do I get an evaluation and a clearance certificate?
Fill out this form and add a signed and unadjusted transcript of records of your previous examination office as well as certificates of the amount of semester hours. These documents shall be send to

After the bachelor degree program I switched to RWTH Aachen University for my master program and got extensive requirements. Will this extend my standard period of studies?
If you have completed a seven-semester bachelor program and therefore received a maximum of 30 credit points requirements: No.
If you have completed a six-semester bachelor program and therefore received 30-60 credit points of requirements: Yes, your standard period of studies will be four semesters. For an appropriate confirmation, please contact the study consel.
Exception: The master teaching at vocational schools has a general standard period of studies of four semesters.
I got requirements upon admission to the master program. Do I have to complete these at the beginning of my studies?
No, you have to prove the completion of the requirement subjects upon registration of the master thesis. You can take them study-accompanying. However, since the requirements affect basic courses, it makes sense to complete them at the beginning of the master program.
I got requirements upon admission to the master program. Will these appear on my master certificate? Will they affect the final grade?
The grades in your requirement subjects will not affect your final grade. If and how they might be recorded on your
certificate is currently (status quo: August 2012) being reviewed by the examination board.
How do I change into a degree program Mechanical Engineering/Business Administration and Engineering in the field Mechanical Engineering/CES at RWTH Aachen University?
Bachelor:
To change into one of the above-mentioned bachelor programs from another university or degree program, please keep with the following procedure:
- Ask the Student Affairs Office if university places are available in higher semesters and ask for application deadlines. If there are no places available you have to apply for the first semester (start in winter semester).
- If this is the case, submit an application for placement and a clearance certificate to the study counsel (in room 203 in Kackertstraße 9, 52072 Aachen or the red mailbox in front of this room). For each degree program that you have studied so far you add an unadjusted transcript of records. This transcript of records must list all study performances, including failed attempts. You may also send the application to the mentioned address by regular mail.
- The Faculty will place you into a (higher) semester after checking your application and according to the academic performances you completed. With this placement you can apply for the indicated semester with the Student Affairs Office. Please note that the placement is with reservations. No claims for actual accreditation of your hitherto academic performances result on the basis of the placement in your desired degree program.
- If your application was successful and you were enrolled, you still have to initiate an accreditation procedure for getting your hitherto academic performances accredited.

A preliminary examination of which performances which be accredited is not possible due to the current increased workload. Please use the relevant module handbook on www.campus.rwth-aachen.de, to get an impression of which modules could be accredited.
As a matter of principle: Equivalent modules will ex officio be accredited.
Master:
To change into one of the above-mentioned master programs, you have to apply with us.

Übergang Bachelor- in den Masterstudiengang innerhalb der RWTH
How does the transition from the Bachelor to the Master program work?
Der Übergang erfolgt durch eine fristgerechte Bewerbung beim Studierendensekretariat.
Der Übergang vom Bachelor zum Master kann immer nur zum Semesterbeginn (1. April/1. Oktober) erfolgen. Dazu muss das Bachelorstudium bis spätestens 31. März/30. September abgeschlossen werden. (Datum der letzten Prüfung bzw. Abgabe der Bachelorarbeit, also das Datum, das Ihr Zeugnis trägt.). Die Abgabe der Bachelorarbeit muss trotzdem noch im März/September erfolgen. Für die Umschreibung beim Studierendensekretariat ist die Vorlage des Bachelorzeugnissses bzw. einer Bescheinigung vom ZPA über den erfolgreichen Studienabschluss nötig.
Ich konnte meine Bachelorarbeit nicht mehr rechtzeitig anmelden, um mich rechtzeitig in den Master einschreiben zu können.
Dies lag vorallem an der langen Abwesenheit meines Betreuers/Professors. Kann ich meine Bachelorarbeit noch vor Ablauf der Mindestbearbeitungsfrist abgeben, um den Wechsel in den Master zu schaffen?

How and where can I get approval of the examination board for an external project work/bachelor thesis/master thesis/study paper/diploma thesis?
Approval normally occurs in the study counsel instantaneously on site. A fully completed data sheet with all obligatory signatures to date is necessary. It is not possible to digress from the order listed on the data sheet. For approval of project works, the data sheets of all involved participants must be ob hand.
Alternatively, you can send the data sheet by regular mail or drop it into the red mailbox in front of room 201 Kackertstr. 9. In this case you must add an accompanying letter which unambiguously states what should happen after approval:
- Transmission to the Central Examination Office
- Returning it via regular mail or
- Pick-up during office hour
I would like to write an external scientific paper but the company requests a confidentiality clause. Is this (without cooperation or contractual relation to the chair) possible?
No. The decision, from which level on a cooperation exists, is at the discretion of the mentoring professor.
I would like to submit my final thesis/academic paper earlier/later. How long before/after the deadline am I allowed to submit it?

Ich möchte meine wissenschaftliche Arbeit anmelden, dazu benötige ich die Unterschrift vom Prüfungsausschuss.
Auf dem Erfassungsbogen muss ich zuerst zum Zentralen Prüfungsamt, dann zum Prüfungsausschuss und anschließend wieder zum Zentralen Prüfungsamt. Kann ich die Unterschrift vom Prüfungsausschuss evtl. schon vorzeitig erhalten, damit ich beide Unterschriften vom ZPA in einem Termin erhalten kann?
Dies ist leider nicht möglich. Die Prüfungsausschüsse haben entschieden, dass die Themenstellung nur genehmigt wird, wenn Sie auch die formalen Voraussetzungen für eine Anmeldung erfüllen.
Der Betreuer meiner externen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit muss einen adäquaten akademischen Grad vorweisen / ich kann den Titel meines Betreuers nicht auf dem Erfassungsbogen auswählen. Woher erfahre ich, ob mein Betreuer mich auch betreuen darf?
Gemäß dem deutschen Hochschulrecht muss Ihr externer Betreuer mindestens den von Ihnen angestrebten akademischen Grad oder einen hierzu äquivalenten Grad besitzen. D.h. dass Sie eine ingenieurwissenschaftliche Arbeit z.B. nicht von einem Betriebswirt betreuen lassen dürfen. Beachten Sie bitte auch, dass ein Fachhochschulabschluss nach dem deutschen Hochschulrecht nicht äquivalent zu einem universitären Abschluss ist; FH-Absolventen mit dem von Ihnen angestrebten akademischen Grad dürfen Sie daher nicht innerhalb eines Unternehmens betreuen.
Prüfungsan- und -abmeldungen
I would like to switch the degree program/the university or have failed a module exam for good. Do I have to take further exams which are not obligatory for my new degree program?
Basically, you will remain registered for all exams until you will be exmatriculated to the end of the semester. This
especially means that you fail (also for good) those exams in case you fail or do not show up. Upon application to the examination board you can usually withdraw from outstanding exams. For this, you must prove that you are in fact leaving your current degree program. Appropriate proof is an exmatriculation or transfer certificate resp. a confirmation that you have ultimately failed a module.
I would like to take master courses earlier. How does this work?
For taking master courses earlier, you must apply for a change of curriculum. There you apply for the courses (as many as you wish) which you would like to take. After approval of the change of curriculum by the examination board, you register the courses in person during the registration period for diploma students at the Central Examination Office. Master courses taken earlier but failed can be repeated not before being in the master program. Even if you decide to enroll for a different master program than you had planned while applying for taking early master courses, you must – if possible – integrate these courses into the curriculum of your new program.
If you apply for taking master courses of the programs General ME or CES earlier, from three courses on you have to submit a complete curriculum and ask for approval.
The change of curriculum must be supported by the mentor of the master program, not of your bachelor occupational field mentor. If you exclusively wish to take compulsory or elective-compulsory courses earlier, you do not need a signature of your master program mentor.
I am not registered for an exam. What can I do?
Please check first if this situation was caused by a mistake of RWTH Aachen University or by your own fault. In case
you have the confirmation email of the Campus system, which confirms a successful registration for the desired exam during the registration period, you will normally be registered again without problems.
If you do not have such as confirmation, a late registration is only possible in well-founded exceptional cases (e.g. long sickness) by the examination board. For this, an application must be submitted to the examination board, adequate proof must be added.
Applications without reasons have no chances of success.
I would like to improve a grade (Bachelor Examination Regulation – BPO 07). How do I register the grade improvement attempt?
Grade improvement attempts must be registered at the Central Examination Office in person.
A modular registration in Campus is not valid.
Auslandsaufenthalte
Ich möchte im Rahmen eines Auslandaufenthalts Module belegen. Wie kann ich mir diese anschließend an der RWTH anerkennen lassen?
An dieser Stelle gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten:
- Sie beantragen die Fächer spätestens zu Beginn Ihres Aufenthalts im Rahmen einer Studienplanänderung . Die im Rahmen dieses Antrags genehmigten Fächer können Sie anschließend unkompliziert durch Vorlage Ihres Transcript of Records anerkennen lassen. Auf diesem Wege ist auch die Integration von Modulen in Ihrem Curriculum möglich, die Sie an der RWTH in dieser Form nicht wählen können.
- Sie stellen nach Ihrer Rückkehr einen Antrag auf Anerkennung von Studienleistungen (falls Sie vorher keine Studienplanänderung beantragt haben). Im Rahmen dieses Verfahrens werden alle Leistungen anerkannt, die von Inhalt und Umfang her äquivalent zu einer Leistung Ihres regulären Curriculums sind. Andere Fächer können aufgrund des deutschen Hochschulrechts nicht anerkannt werden.
I have studied abroad for one semester and passed exams there. How can I get those accredited now?
If these subjects were approved through a change of curriculum prior to your study abroad, submit a copy of your
approved application as well as your transcript of records. We will then initiate a shortened accreditation procedure fo rthe approved courses.
If you have not applied for a change of curriculum prior to your study abroad you must now submit an application for accreditation of academic performances.
In this case, according to university law, only modules may be accredited which are equivalent in content and extent to a regular module of your bachelor/master program.

My change of curriculum was approved. How do I now register for the exams?
If you wish to register courses which were approved by the change of curriculum, you must register these in person
during the registration period for diploma students at the Central Examination Office.
My change of curriculum was approved. But now I would like to take other subjects after all. What do I have to do?
The approved change of curriculum is noncommittal – until registration for an exam. If you do not want to take approved but so far not registered exams after all, it is sufficient to not register those exams. If you wish to take other subjects instead (which are also not intended in the study curriculum), you apply for a new change of curriculum.
What is the deadline for completing academic performances in the diploma degree program in order to receive the diploma degree? Can I change to the bachelor program earlier in case it is obvious that I am not able to complete the diploma in time?
For receiving the diploma degree you have to:
- Pass all exams at the latest in the winter semester 2013/2014.
- Submit the diploma thesis at the latest on March 31st, 2014 (Attention: Pay attention to the minimal processing time of 2 months (Mechanical Engineering) res. 4 months (Business Administration and Engineering). For the registration of the thesis calculate the usual registration time of ten working days.
If you do not manage to fulfill this, you will obligatorily change to the bachelor.
All passed diploma exams, which are equivalent to the bachelor exams in content and extent, will be accredited.
The subdivided exams, i.e. Higher Mathematics 2/3 will be proportionally be accredited for the two individual exams with the same grade.
Some of your exams might not be taken into account in the bachelor because they belong to the master program. You can apply for accreditation (see download area) of these exams for your master program after enrolment into the master.
If you think that you will not complete the diploma in time, you can change to the bachelor earlier. Please pay attention to the following form (see mail attachment).
Since you might have to complete individual courses additionally (i.e. Communication and Organization Development), an early change can be beneficial to save study time.

Die Bearbeitung dauert i.d.R. 1-2 Werktage. Da wir Ihren Fall prüfen und bewerten müssen ist eine Bearbeitung während der Studienberatung leider nicht möglich.
