Submission of the application for admission to the doctoral procedure
The doctoral candidate must submit the application for admission to the doctoral procedure in the administrative office of the dean’s office.

The application must be submitted at the latest three weeks before the respective faculty council meeting (or council of elders meeting) in the administrative office of the dean’s office of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Submission of suggestions
The mentoring professor must make suggestions to the dean in written form on the following points:
- Reviewer, chairperson and observer
- Topic of the dissertation
- Specification about the degree striven for – Dr.-Ing. or Dr.rer.nat.
This information must be available two weeks before the respective faculty council meeting in the administrative office of the dean’s office.
Initiation of the doctoral procedure
The faculty council initiates the procedure. It nominates the reviewer, the chairperson and the observer.
The candidate receives notification from the dean after the meeting that his or her procedure has been initiated and which reviewers have been nominated. Parallel to this, the dean contacts all reviewers and asks for production of the reports.
Production of expert’s reports
The reviewers produce the reports within three months. The expert’s reports should be submitted in duplicate to the administrative office of the dean’s office and should contain a suggested grade.
Display duration
After reception of all reports the display starts with a duration of 14 days. The deadline for objections ends each time with the end of the second workday after the end of the duration of the display.
Notification of oral examination topic, date and location
If not done yet, at least ten days before the scheduled examination date, the mentor in accordance with the reviewers, the chairperson and the observer, sends a notification to the dean containing the topic of the oral examination, the date and location.
The oral examination will generally be conducted in German. Upon request of the candidate the examination may be conducted in English. The oral examination consists of a lecture of 45 minutes about a topic which deviates from the dissertation as well as an examination of at least 45 minutes which ranges from the dissertation to topics from the whole subject to which the dissertation belongs.
