Founded in 1880 as one of the first departments of the RWTH Aachen University, our field of work and expertise is more topical and relevant than ever: supporting and enhancing the sustainable supply of modern societies with the raw materials they need. This is our goal both in R&D and in educating future mining engineers and geoscientists. Our team consists of senior and junior researchers as well as student assistants from different cultural and educational backgrounds and disciplines – Mining Engineers, Mine Surveyors, Geoscientists, Industrial and Environmental Engineers.
National and international research institutions as well as private companies form our main client base. Our portfolio covers underground mining, mine ventilation, mineral economics, raw material supply, sustainable development, environmental management and occupational health & safety in the mining sector. Prof. Per Nicolai Martens is the acting head of the Institute since 1992.
