Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries
In the “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries” Cluster of Excellence more than 25 professors are conducting research in interdisciplinary teams along with their colleagues from mechanical engineering, materials science, mathematics, economics and psychology in order to find solutions for successful production in high-wage countries.
Along with the Cluster of Excellence, the “Aachen House of Production Technology” was established, pooling the production-related competences at RWTH Aachen. It particularly allows for the cooperation and involvement of companies as well as early-career scientists all over the world into the activities of the Cluster of Excellence.
RWTH Aachen University’s production engineering institutes appreciate the positive decision of the authorising committee made on June 15th 2012 concerning the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries”. The cluster had applied for a funding budget of 40 Million Euro. “This extensive funding acknowledges and emphasizes the importance of local production for national economics and employment”, states cluster spokesman Prof. Dr. Ing. Christian Brecher. The Aachen researchers are assuming the responsibility of meeting the great challenges of developing sustainable and globally competitive production technologies in order to strengthen Germany as a business location.
Production is a “hidden champion” in its contribution to the welfare and social stability of industrial high-wage countries. Over 30 percent of the total workforce in Europe depends on production. To a growing extent, production is facing ever increasing external pressures caused by global megatrends that create highly dynamic ecological and social challenges. The CoE is now facing the task of combining and enhancing the results of the first funding period for a multidisciplinary holistic theory of production while incorporating ecologic and social boundary conditions. This holistic strategy shall enable companies to immediately react to global challenges and benefit from this advancement.
