What Happened to the Soul?

The term soul has disappeared from modern psychology. How did things get to the point that measuring has replaced understanding, and the soul has turned into behavior and experience? As chair of the Bischop Hemmerle professorship, Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Dipl. Psych. Helmut Reuter will consider these questions in his presentation series. The endowned professorship was created in 1996, in order to enable selected individuals to teach at RWTH Aachen. Named after the former Aachen bishop, the professorship places focus on disciplinary and inter-faculty questions. Individuals who held the professorship before Professor Reuter include former Federal Minister Prof. Dr. Herta Däubler-Gmelin in 2011 and former Federal Minister Dr. Norbert Blüm.

Idea Competition "Country of Demographic Chances"

As part of the 2013 Year of Science "The Demographic Chance", an idea competition is taking place, that is being held by the RWTH Aachen institute cluster IMA/ZLW & IfU. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing funding for the award money and will announce the competition winners publicly. The Aachen researchers are working on the metaproject DemoScreen as part of the funding topic "Innovative Ability in Demographic Change."

The RWTHextern Citizens' Forum is again offering a diverse program to residents of Aachen. Here are a few examples: One of the first highlights of this semester is the concert of WDR Bigband in collaboration with drummer and percussionist Bodek Janke. The project "Global Dance Culture" is a live performance, that brings together music from different continents. The concert will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013, in Aula 1 of the RWTH Aachen Main Building, Templergraben 55. Beginn ist um 20.00 Uhr. Tickets during advance sales are 7 Euros or 4 Euros for the reduced price. Tickets at the box office are 8 Euros or 5 Euros reduced price. Tickets are available at Musikhaus Hogrebe and Frankenne.

Professor Thomas Gries und Dr. Michael Glowania from the RWTH Institute of Textile Technology (ITA) have won the JEC Innovation Award. They received the award for the discovery that pitch-based carbon fibers, which are arranged in a honeycomb structure, have a thermal conductivity of more than 27 W/mk and thus conduct heat as well as alloyed steel. In January 2013, this discovery already won them the first prize in the 2012 "NRW Inventing the Future" Competition.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Janina Fels was honored with the Lothar Cremer Prize by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Akustik e.V. in Merano. Fels has been junior professor of Medical Acoustics at RWTH Aachen since October 2012. Since December 2012 she has also worked as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, Structural and Functional Organization of the Brain (INM-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The 35 year-old studied electrical engineering at the Aachen university and completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Technical Acoustics. She completed research stays in the USA and Denmark.

Geschwister-Scholl-Straße Temporarily Closed

Currently, a new lecture hall center accommodating more than 4,200 students is being built on Claßenstraße, Aachen. The new center has about 14,000 m² of floor space and provides space for 11 lecture halls, 16 seminar rooms, and a café, as well as study areas, a room for the physics collection, and storage facilities. As part of the construction works, a heavy-duty crane will be assembled and then used to lift large steel beams into position. For this reason, between March 20 and April 15, 2013, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße will be closed to the public. RWTH Aachen and the NRW Construction & Real Estate Agency (BLB, Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW) ask for your understanding and patience during this period of construction work.

Breast Cancer Marker Identified in the Bloodstream

To detect breast cancer early on and to make the screening as patient-friendly as possible – this is the aim of an Aachen research group headed by Professor Edgar Dahl. The researchers of the Molecular Oncology work group at the Institute of Pathology at University Hospital Aachen have now identified two so-called tumor suppressor genes: with the help of a special process, these genes can be detected in the bloodstream as markers of breast cancer. The researchers have now published the results of a first study in the scientific journal “Breast Cancer Research”.

The Centre for Higher Education Development, CHE for short, has published the “Diverse Excellence 2012” university rankings list, which provides an assessment of the natural science disciplines at German universities and universities of applied sciences. The study ranks RWTH Aachen to be nationally leading in several disciplines. The focus of the event is masonry: this constantly must adapt to increasing demands, such as sound insulation, and heat and moisture protection. The optimization of masonry methods is essential, because 70 percent of all wall structures of residential buildings are constructed with masonry. Matthias Jarke Appointed to CONNECT Advisory Forum

RWTH Professor Matthias Jarke has been appointed to the newly formed CONNECT Advisory Forum, CAF for short, which is to advise the EU commission’s General Directorate for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (CONNECT). Connect is responsible for the implementation of the “Digital Agenda for Europe” project, initiated by the commission’s Vice President Neelie Kroes. On 28 February 2013, the founding meeting took place in Brussels. CAF consists of 28 members selected from 350 candidates. Aside from Matthias Jarke, there are two further members from Germany, with a background in business and industry. Jarke is Head of the Chair of Computer Science 5, Information Systems and Databases, and Chairman of the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group.

The ground breaking ceremony for the new ICT Cubes on Monday, March 4, 2013, kicked off another joint project between the Federal State of NRW, RWTH Aachen, and the Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW, BLB NRW for short, as contracter and rentor. About 20 million Euros of federal state funds are going towards the new building for the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology on Kopernikusstraße. RWTH Aachen Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Rudolf Mathar, and deputy head of the BLB Aachen branch, Ute Willems, broke the ground together.

School Students Learn about the World of Computer Science at RWTH Aachen

40 school students from grades 9 to 13 are participating in the Aachen Computer Science Days from March 7 to 10, 2013. The Department of Computer Science is holding the event for the third time in collaboration with the RWTH Aachen School Project Office and the Verein mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlicher Excellence-Center an Schulen e.V..

Participants of the Aachen Computer Science Days were successful either in the Federal Computer Science Competition or registered in the STEM Winter School, which RWTH Aachen holds in collaboration with MINT-EC. During the four days, the school students investigate what computer science is and learn about different topics and fields in computer science. The program includes topics from the areas programming languages, search algorithms, artificial intelligence, parallel programming, undecidability, and communication. Theoretical algorithms will be implemented through programming lego mindstorm robots, which will face off against each other in a multi-player game.

Student Team Successful in Marketing Communication Competition

As "Team Aachen", students from RWTH Aachen and the FH won third place at the 21st GWA Junior Agency. The GWA Junior Agency is a competition for young adults in marketing communication. In the competition, students from a business and art faculties or universities work together with an advertising agency.

The Berlin advertising agency Heimat was the Aachen students' partner for their copyright campaign "LEGAL? ILLEGAL? NICHT EGAL!“. The campaign was particularly praised for its successful change in perspective: from the accusations of those, who breach copyright, to the producers of ideas. Examples of ideas were cooking recipes, pictures, and texts, which are all protected by copyright. The students presented a TV program, in which "Grandma Käthe's" recipe for cheesecake is stolen. The program ended with the appeal: "What belongs to you, should remain yours. Respect the creator""

The students from RWTH Aachen were advised by Univ.-Prof. Dr.oec. Daniel Wentzel from the Chair of Marketing. Prof. Christoph Scheller from the Department of Design advised the students from FH Aachen.

Studies for Senior Citizens Starts Again in April

The new course schedule for RWTH Aachen studies for senior citizens is now available. A wide variety of topics and activities are available for Summer Semester 2013. The focus is the regular courses from all the faculties, that are open to senior citizen students. With this program, RWTH Aachen is actively working on the dialogue between young and older people, from which both sides can profit. Additionally, there are events and courses offered by teachers at the university open exclusively to senior citizen students.

Johanna Heitzer is "Mathematician of the Month"

Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Johanna Heitzer has been named Mathematician of the Month by the German Mathematical Society. The society, which connects 5000 mathematicians, awards this distinction who inspre through their involvement in mathematics. Since September 2011, Heitzer has been in charge of Didactics in Mathematics at RWTH Aachen. The 42 year old taught at a Gymnasium before obtaining her doctorate. Her focuses include the development of teaching materials. She has had work on "health and mathematics" published in "mathematik lehre", the journal on mathematics lessons. "Health and medicine are topics that affect everyone. Math class in school can be implemented in different ways for different age groups. Here functions, different ways of depiction, statistics, and medical technology with a focus on signal processing can be worked on and advanced ," said Heitzer. The professor tests her ideas in workshops with school children. She also supervises numerous projects on the transition from school to university and is the contact partner for prospective students.

Transforming Carbon Dioxide into a Valuable Resorce

Fossil fuels are a limited resource. For this reason, the federal government supports the transformation of the economy from a petroleum- to a bio-based economy with its “Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Initiative.” Selected industrial companies and educational and research institutions take the lead in this ambitious program. The Aachen Biology and Biotechnology department contributes to two of the three alliances selected for funding by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, with research projects led by RWTH Professors Ulrich Schwaneberg, Institute of Biotechnology, Lars Blank, Institute of Applied Microbiology, and Alexander Böker, Interactive Materials Research (DWI) and Chair of Macromolecular Materials and Surfaces. Over the next few years, these projects will receive 2.5 million Euros in funding.

eMoVe – Electromobility Moves Aachen

The Aachen region is once again part of the model region Electromobility Rhein-Ruhr, funded by the federal government, with the project eMoVe, headed by the RWTH Aachen Institute of Urban Planning and Transport. The goal of the project is to create framework conditions for an electromobile mobility association, eMoVe, in the region. The project has an entire volume of abuot 2 million Euros and a funding volumen of 1.4 million Euros from the federal government. As a part of the project, business models and processes will be developed and tested, further electric vehicles will be integrated into vehicle fleets, electromobility stations will be set up, and electromobility components for commula planning processes will be worked out. The project also involves current proposals from transport and urban development in Aachen by working with the Aachen Transport Development Plan and the Richtericher Dell construction project.

The project partners wish to collectively develop the topic of electromobility and anchor it in the region by June 2015. Project partners include the RWTH Aachen Institute of Urban Planning and Transport, the City of Aachen, ASEAG, AVV, the car-sharing service cambio Aachen, EcoLibro mobility consulting, Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Probst & Consorten marketing consulting, and STAWAG. The RWTH Aachen Instiute of Urban Planning and Transport is the lead manager for the project.

RWTH Institute Investigates New Technologies in the Workplace of Tomorrow

Innovative technologies and their effects on employees are the focus of research at the RWTH Aachen Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics. The use of data glasses - small displays that are worn in front of the eyes like glasses - is currently being researched. The institute is looking for German speaking subjects between 18 and 60 years of age for a study between Feburary and May 2013. Participants are asked to dismantle a car motor and other automobile components. The information needed to do this task is provided via the data glasses, so that any prior technical knowledge is not necessary. Participants will be compensated 50 Euros for six hours. Individiuals suffering from migraines, those who wear progressive power lenses, and individuals with muscular-skeletal diseases are not allowed to particpate. The study is being conducted in cooperation with the Franhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing, and Ergonomics and the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The English language Master is a joint degree that offers international and German students a unique possibility to combine engineering studies at RWTH Aachen University with the management studies of a foreign partner university, MSM in the Netherlands, within a two-year program.

The Association of German Engineers, VDI, awarded Catarina Caetano da Rosa the Conrad Matschoß Prize for her dissertation. The prize is awarded every two years and is endowed with 3000 Euros. Caetano da Rosa completed her doctoral studies from 2006 to 2011 at the Chair for the History of Technology under supervision by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Walter Kaiser. The doctoral dissertation will appear as a book in May 2013, and will be titled "Operationsroboter in Aktion. Kontroverse Innovationen in der Medizintechnik“ or "Surgical Robots in Action. Controversial Innovations in Medical Technology". Caetano da Rosa is currently employed at the Technical University of Darmstadt in the Department of the History of Technology.

Europe’s Fastest Computer Inaugurated at Jülich

Jülich’s new supercomputer JUQUEEN was inaugurated at Forschungszentrum Jülich today in the presence of representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF for short, and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, MIW). The supercomputer is currently the fastest in Europe and has a peak performance of 5.9 petaflops, that means about six quadrillion arithmetic operations per second. It is simultaneously one of the most energy efficient supercomputers worldwide. The BlueGene/Q-System from IBM opens up new possibilities for complex scientific simulations to researchers, especially those in the neurosciences.

Vocational Training at RWTH Successfully Completed

61 apprentices at RWTH Aachen received their completion certificates. They learned one of nine vocations in different institutions and institutes at the university and successfully passed their exams. Heinz Gehlen from the IHK Aachen handed out the certificates. In a festive ceremony held in Moscow on January 25, Professor Thomas Gries, director of the RWTH Aachen Institute of Textile Technology, ITA for short, was awarded an honorary professorship by Lomonosov Moscow State University. “Prof Gries is honoured in lieu of his extraordinary scientific achievement in the development of fiber based composites,“ announced Prof Sadownitschij, Rector of MSU, to the prominent guests from industry, research and politics. The distinguished professorship is awarded once a year to a deserving foreign scientist as well as a Russian citizen. This year, the first woman in space, Russian Valentina Tereshkova received the honor, too. Historically, such honorary professorships from MSU have been bestowed upon several Nobel laureates such as Niels Bohr.

RWTH Aachen has provided significant contributions to the discovery of the so-called Higgs boson at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Thomas Rachel, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has now visited the University to get more detailed information on the discovery. Commenting on his visit, Rachel said that “I share the delight at this outstanding achievement in particle physics with the Aachen researchers, which is also a success for the Federal Ministry's long-term funding strategy for basic research projects." The member of parliament adds that “with their contributions to the discovery of the Higgs particle at CERN, the Aachen scientists played a major part in providing the answer to a decades-old fundamental question in physics.“

RWTH Aachen On Board EU's Flagship

The decision was announced on January 28, 2013, in Brussels: two large projects were selected as "visionary research initiatives" of the European Union. Winners were one project to simulate the human brain, in order to be able to find ways to heal diseases like Alzheimer's, and the project Graphene, a new material, which is said to have revolutionary characteristics, for example when used for flexible and transparent electronics. RWTH Aachen is a project partner of both initiatives.

Graphene, the two-dimensional form of carbon, is considered one of the most promising materials for future IT applications. This is due to the material's special properties: it is almost as hard and durable as diamond, but can be stretched like rubber. It outperforms copper as a conductor of heat and silicon as a conductor of electricity. It is virtually invisible, as it is composed of a single layer of carbon atoms. It is chemically resilient, impermeable to most substances, and based on carbon, a readily available material.

European Mega-Project Develops Methods to Simulate Human Brain

The detailed simulation of the human brain on a supercomputer, from genetics to the molecular level to the interaction of entire cell clusters – this is the visionary goal of the Human Brain Project, in which several RWTH institutions are participating. On January 28, 2013, the European Commission announced that the highly ambitious ten-year initiative is one of the two large-scale research projects to receive funding from the European Union, within the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship Program. About 400000 tourists a year from Central Europe participate in a trekking trip in Europe, South America, North Africa, or Asia, making trekking one of the most popular recreational sports. Many of the adventurers, however, are not sufficiently prepared for activity thousands of meters up in the air. This pertains above all to safety management and first-aid knowledge, but also dental prevention.

For this reason, Professor Dr. med. Thomas Küpper from the RWTH Aachen Institute of Occupational Medicine started a project: In the Aachen Dental and Medical Expedition, ADEMED for short, doctoral candidates learn how field research in remote areas is organized. "Data has to be collected there, where it originates. Field research also includes working with local offices and carriers, budgeting, and public relations," reports Küpper.

Research is being conducted at 5550 meters above sea level in the Himalayas. Students investigate the hygiene of travelers' drinking water, their pre-existing conditions, the travel pharmacy, and the consumption of performance enhancing drugs or supplements. The German-Nepalese collaboartion with doctors and students on location works well.

Sobbe-Stiftung Prize Awarded for First Time

Treating Organ Damage to Avoid Transplants

Diseases such as diabetes or hepatitis, or autoimmune diseases often lead to irreperable organ damage. Oftentimes a transplant is the only thing that helps those affected. However, suitable organs are not always available in time. Scientists at RWTH Aachen and the University of Bonn in SFB/TRR 57 are looking for alternative treatment methods. They research the source of so called organ fibrosis - the scarring of organs as a result of liver or kidney disease. The knowledge they gain is expected to help contribute to the development of innovative treatments, in order to avoid organ transplants.

In 2010, there were about 216 million malaria cases, and an estimated 700,000 malaria deaths. So far, there is no effective vaccine against the disease, and resistance to treatments is increasing. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria remains one of the greatest challenges in medicine today. A research group headed by PD Dr. Gabriele Pradel from the RWTH Institute for Molecular Biotechnology and involving scientists from universities in Jena, Würzburg, and Nijmegen has now published an article on the transmission of malaria in the scientific journal Cell Host and Microbe, titled “Malaria Parasites Co-opt Human Factor H to Prevent Complement-mediated Lysis in the Mosquito Midgut.” The article describes the mechanism used by the pathogen to prevent destruction by the human complement system.

RWTH Historians Publish "Encylopedia of Ancient History"

RWTH Aachen historians were involved in the "Encylopedia of Ancient History", that has recently been published with 13 volumes. The goal of the lexicon is to gather all of the crucial aspects of ancient history and to serve as the foundation for studies in ancient history worldwide. An international team of publishers and authors worked on the publication, that covers the entire spectrum of history in the Mediterranean region from the Bronze Age to the begin of the Arabic expansion. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klaus Freitag, RWTH Aachen Chair of Ancient History: "The members of the Chair of Ancient History contributed about 30 of the article in the encyclopedia, including those on 'Corinth', 'Antoninus Pius', and 'Historiography, Late Antique'. The goal of the Helmholtz Energy Alliance "Technologies for the Future Energy Grid" is to make the energy grid suitable for the strengthened used of renewalbe sources. The RWTH Aachen Institute for High Voltage Technology, IfHT for short, the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, ISEA, and the Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics, IAEW, are all involved in the research program coordinated by the Karlsruher Institute of Technology or KIT. Together with other universities and energy suppliers, the alliance is working on solutions for a flexible and solution electricity grid, that sustains the fluctuating supply of electricity from renewable energies. Other topics include the use of existing gas grids to save energy and the coupling of electricity and gas grids. The Helmholtz Association is funding the alliance in 2013 and 2014 with a total of 3.2 million euros.

ITA Wins First Prize in the 2012 "NRW Inventing the Future" Competition

The scientists Dr. Michael Glowania and Professor Thomas Gries from the RWTH Institute of Textile Technology (ITA) have found that with a thermal conductivity of more than 27 W/mk, pitch-based carbon fibers arranged in a honeycomb structure conduct heat as well as alloyed steel. For this discovery, they now received the first prize in the “NRW Inventing the Future” 2012 competition. This development can be seen as a quantum leap in lightweight construction: Now, important industrial sectors such as the automotive, aerospace and mechanical engineering industries are able to produce low-density components with high thermal conductivity out of carbon fibers and polymers.

RWTH Scientists Conduct Research on Windfall Areas

Windfall areas are the result of storms that bend or uproot trees. In 2007, storm Kyrill toppled and uprooted trees in an area of about 123,500 acres, resulting in damage of approximately 1,5 billion dollars. The damage is still visible today, as only about 55 percent of the affected sites have been reforested; for the other areas, reforestation through natural regeneration is hoped for. The Research Institute for Ecosystem Analysis and Assessment (gaiac), an RWTH-affiliated institute, is currently developing a simulation model to represent the natural regeneration of these areas. This model is a contribution to the “Virtual Forest NRW” project which receives 170,000 Euros in funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Excellent junior RWTH Aachen scientists in the geosciences received awards from the Professor Dr. Karl-Heinrich Heitfeld Foundation. Two dissertations and two Master's theses were honored this year, and a travel grant was awarded.

The award ceremony took place at the RWTH Aachen SuperC. After Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg greeted guests, the Dean of the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering, Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Ralf Littke delivered the certificates to Dr.rer.nat. Andre Banning and Dr.rer.nat. Christoph Grützner for their outstanding dissertations. Michael Kettermann, M.Sc., and Julia Melcher, M.Sc., were also recognized for their Master's theses. Dipl.-Phys. Yves Gensterblum received the travel grant.

The foundation was started in 1995 by professor emeritus of engineering geology and hydrogeology, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinrich Heitfeld, and his wife. Heitfeld, who has received an Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany First Class, was appointed at RWTH Aachen in 1970. In 1990 he received emeritus status. During this time, he contributed greatly to the development of engineering geology in Germany.

New Heart Valves: Gentle to the Blood and Extra Durable

Heart valves must be persistent and reliable: The human hearts beats about 90000 times a day. With this continuous operation, heart valves can constrict or become leaky over the course of life. The only effective therapy is substitution with a prosthetic. Over 200000 heart valves were implanted worldwide in 2009. Until now, mechanical prosthetics made of carbon and biologically from cow hearts or pig heart valves have mostly substituted the diseased organ parts. Engineers Maximilian Kütting and Ingo Nadzeyka from the Institute of Applied Medical Technology have developed a heart valve made out of polyurethane, that theoretically combines the advantages of the biological and mechanical heart valves without their weaknesses. This idea has been distinguished by the Specialist Association Foamed Plastics and Polyurethanes, FSK for short, with the Polyurethane Innovation Award.

The goal of the new NRW research cluster SusChemSys (Sustainable Chemical Synthesis) is the sustainable synthesis of chemical products. Six academic partners and seven from the industry have come together to work towards this goal. The federal state of NRW is providing a large portion of the funding for the association’s project. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, German researchers have now introduced a method by which carbon dioxide can be catalytically hydrogenated to make formic acid. In this process, carbon dioxide is not only a starting material; it also acts—in a supercritical state—as the solvent for separation of the product. RWTH Professor Rainer Fischer, Chair of Molecular Biotechnology at RWTH Aachen and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology explains: “Substances such as the neutralizing antibody 2G12 offer protection against infection from pathogens. It binds a particular viral protein, the gp120 protein, to the surface of the virus, so that the pathogen can no longer dock on the immunocompetent cells. The antibodies have been produced in animal cell cultures till now. The process is elaborate and expensive. So-called molecular farming presents a safer and, above all, cheaper alternative.” Molecular farming is a process in biotechnology, in which active pharmaceutical ingredients are produced with the help of agriculture.

Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg thanked him in the name of the university for his involvement and effort. Wolfgang Thomas is Chair of Computer Science 7 (Logic and Theory of Discrete Systems). He studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the University of Freiburg, and completed his doctoral and postdoctoral studies there as well. He first began at RWTH Aachen University in 1982. Thomas switched to the University of Kiel in 1989 and finally returned to RWTH Aachen in 1998.

Jury winner, and thus the winner of Falling Walls Lab 2012 in Cologne, is Mai-Thi Nguyen-Kim from RWTH Aachen. She conducts research in the field of nanomedicine in the treatment of cancer. In her three minute presentation, she detailed how tiny nano transports can break through cell walls, in order to channel medicine to the inside of the cell. Her new approach entails building together a medicine transport in such a way, so that cancer cells are attacked without healthy cells being damaged.

The Institute was established in 1952, with the aim of conducting research in the areas of protein chemistry and keratin fiber research. Even today, the abbreviation DWI hints at the institution’s initial research focus: Deutsches Wollforschungsinstitut - German Institute for Wool Research. In the meantime, however, the institute’s key research areas have broadened and changed. Today, it pools competencies in the areas of macromolecular chemistry, nanomaterials, membrane and bio-technology, and protein engineering, with the goal of developing and investigating new interactive and bioactive functional materials, e.g. for biomedical applications. The Institute has never abandoned its roots in protein chemistry, however. Following this tradition, on the occasion of the 60^th anniversary of the research institution and in honor of its first Director, the new study hall and library “Helmut Zahn-Bibliothek” was inaugurated.

The facts are alarming: The number of students suffering from mental illnesses requiring treatment has increased dramatically over the past years. For many of those affected, reluctance to seek professional help continues to be high. In addition, there is a lack of suitable options. RWTH Aachen, together with the University of Applied Sciences Aachen (FH Aachen), would like to stem this tide by expanding its service offerings: At the Center for Mental Health (ZPG) for students and postgraduates, a team made up of psychiatrists, psychotherapists and social workers is available at short notice; i.e., without any waiting periods, for professional help with all mental problems and crisis events. Upon request, this service can also be provided in English.

There never were cathedral springs. This mistaken assumption, based on the finds of Roman baths during the construction of the Hungarian Chapel in 1755, has been dropped. As Prof. Thomas R. Rüde from the Department of Hydrogeology outlines in a recently published first volume of Aachen city history, drilling during restoration work on the cathedral in the last two years can clearly prove that the limestone layers containing the thermal water lay over 7 meters under the floor of the cathedral and more than 4 meters under the floor level of the Romans.

Starting immediately, more than 170 researchers, technicians, and administrative personnel from the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen University (E.ON ERC) are working in spacious and optimal conditions in their new main building, located on the northern edge of the Campus grounds. The move from the neighboring interim offices, which quickly became too small, to the new space was completed just a few days ago. The new rooms are spacious and provided with especially energy-efficient light, heating, and air-conditioning.

Siemens and RWTH want to achieve the first worldwide external "Siemens Research Center" together. Siemens is providing a total of 6 million Euros for the ambitious undertaking, which is planned for four years. January 1, 2012 is the start of the project, and it is expected that at least nine doctoral students will complete their studies through the Siemens Research Center. "A cooperation of this scale and with such an ambitious research program is a first, even for RWTH Aachen, which is positioned extremely well among industry cooperations. The Director the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) and RWTH Chair of Laser Technology, Professor Reinhart Poprawe, and his team of laser researchers are the winners of this year's NRW Innovation Award in the category of "innovation." The team members include Dr. Andres Gasser, Dr. Ingomar Kelbassa, Dr. Wilhelm Meiners, and Dr. Konrad Wissenbach.

RWTH Aachen saw an increase in the number of students again this year. According to the student data available on November 5, there are a total of 35,813 students enrolled at RWTH Aachen - 31% of which are female. That is 3,500 more students than last year.

To make this extensive student support possible, the university has raised more than € 1 million from private sector donors. Any financial contribution from the private sector is doubled by federal and state matching funds, provided through the NRW and National Scholarship programmes ("Deutschlandstipendium").
