Accreditation and Course of Study Evaluation

The course of study evaluation procedure is an internal analysis and evaluation of the current strengths and weaknesses with the goal to control and improve the quality. A self-assessment aims for more transparency of the teaching and learning standard in order to optimise the learning and examination procedures. As a result, the objective of the evaluation is to reach highest quality level in teaching and learning.

The accreditation on the other hand, is the decision by an external body on whether the given standards for a course of study are met or not. The goal of the accreditation procedure is therefore to contribute to the quality assurance of learning and teaching through the establishment of minimum standards set by an external body. The internal cooperation of the university in this procedure only has a preparatory and supporting function.

In order to use the synergy effects of both procedures and reduce the workload for the faculties, both procedures are linked together at RWTH Aachen.

Accreditation and Approval by the State

Until now, the courses of study have been accredited by the Ministry for Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. However, Bachelor's and Master's courses of study now need to be accredited before they are implemented, whereby the Ministry must only be notified that the course of study has been accredited.
