Natural Products and related Redox Catalysts: Basic Research and Applications in Medicine and Agriculture
The RedCat Initial Training Network
RedCat is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network for early-stage and experienced researchers funded by the Framework 7 "People" programme of the European Union.
RedCat provides research and training opportunities for ten early-stage and four experienced researchers across Europe, with 18 partner and associated institutions from France, Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, adn the UK.
RedCat conducts research addressing highly significant questions in the area of natural product research, intracellular redox processes, drug development and "green" agriculture.
Individual projects run across the scientific disciplines chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine and agricultural research.
RedCat researchers receive extensive training in research methods and research related subjects, including bioethics, intellectual property and communication. Training is provided by experts in the field, at excellent institutions with the most modern equipment and techniques.
Key Research Areas
Research is being conducted within four stand-alone, yet connected work packages based on the emerging links between natural agents, cellular redox control, and signaling and the resulting opportunities to develop new agents for preventive, therapeutic and agricultural purposes.
Under the common ‘redox and catalysis’ nominator, research will address natural antioxidants from edible plants for the prevention of human illnesses relevant to an ageing society; intracellular redox control and signalling processes; ‘green’ antibiotics; fungicides and pesticides from plants and mushrooms for medical and agricultural uses; and redox catalysts for selectively killing cancer cells under oxidative stress.
Studies within these emerging fields will be highly multi-disciplinary and include cutting-edge methods from various branches of chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, biology, agricultural and medical/cancer research.
