Profile

The University of Tokyo is a public university that was founded in 1877. It is generally the university regarded with the most prestige in Japan.

The university has a total of 30,000 students. It has ten faculties, two with which RWTH Aachen University cooperates: the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering. Only RWTH students in faculties one to six are allowed to participate in the exchange.

The University of Tokyo has three main campuses: Hongo Campus, Komaba Campus, and Kashiwa Campus. However institutions connected to the university are located all over Japan.

The University of Tokyo also invites students in engineering sciences to participate in their six-week research project The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program UTRIP for students. All students are guaranteed generous financial support to cover any incidental costs and expenses.

The School of Engineering der University of Tokyo is also organizing a Summer Program which offers Bachelor and Master students the opportunity to collect research experience in the university's laboratories.

Please also note that the University of Tokyo offers two other study programs: The Global Science Course, GSC, for Bachelor's students and Global Science Graduate Course, GSCC, for Master's students. Accepted applicants are also provided with a monthly stipend during their participation in the program.

Please note that most of the lectures for bachelor students are taught in Japanese and that you have to prove JLPT1 or equivalent level of Japanese skills.

Alternatively you have the possibility to make pure laboratory or research stays. For this, no credit points are awarded.

Please also note that Bachelor students are not allowed to take any graduate courses.
