What is StOEHn?
The StOEHn survey is one of the central quality evaluation processes with the areas of teaching and learning. These are established in an ordinance and are carried out in every faculty of RWTH Aachen.
StOEHn is a collaborative project between RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Student representatives from the RWTH Aachen Student Union (AStA) and the FH AStA are likewise involved. This project is supported by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).
StOEHn is Worth It
The workload assessment serves to review the Bachelor and Master courses of study and see whether their workloads are appropriate and achievable. The assessment should also ascertain whether courses of study can be successfully completed in the scheduled time period. This is achieved through inspection the amount of work in a semester and in the entire course of study.
Shortcomings in an estimated workload can only be discovered through the active participation of RWTH Aachen students. Fixing this deficit ensures courses of study are achievable and that the quality of the university education is lasting.
Common Question About StOEHn and Participation
What does workload mean?
Workload is the amount of work students have to accomplish in order to reach their learning goals. It is expressed through the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) points. One ECTS points equas a workload of 30 hours.
What is a module?
A module is a completed learning unit that teaches specific learning goals. It encompasses at least two class meetings as well as independent study time and is completed with an assessment.
Who can participate in StOEHn?
All RWTH Aachen Bachelor and Master students, as long as the course of study is modeled in CAMPUS.
How often does StOEHn take place?
Starting in the WS 2009/2010, you can log in as often as you want throughout the semester and enter or update the amount of time you took for your studies. We recommend regularly participating, so that the most exact data can be gathered.
When does StOEHn take place?
You can participate throughout the semester, within regular lecture periods as well as lecture-free periods and after the exam period.
How long do I have to participate in StOEHn?
Since exact survey periods no longer exist, you can enter the time you took throughout the whole semester. Details about the semester should be entered in the questionnaire two to three weeks after the start of the following semester at the latest. At that point the system will be reset so that only entries for the new semester are possible.
How do I find out, when StOEHn is taking place?
At the beginning and end of the semester, you will be notified per e-mail through your university e-mail account on how to access the survey. Additionally, reminder emails will be sent in regular intervals that you can determine yourself: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
How can I prepare for the survey?
The best thing to do is to create a table as a reminder, for example with rows for each module and columns for the number of weeks, in which you can enter your workload now and again. When you go to input information, you only need to input the data.
What and where can I enter comments?
Under A - Question 4, you can make notes that directly have to do with the evaluated modules. If you would like to make suggestions for improvements to the StOEHn evaluation method, you can do so at the end under Question C. If you would like an individual response, please contact the StOEHn team.
Why can't I evaluate the lecturers too?
The assessment exclusively serves to check actual student workload. Lecturers can be evaluated in the student class evaluations every semester as well as the course of study evaluation from your faculty.
Why haven't the structure, layout, or design changed at all?
Please inform us in detail, at which points, e.g. the questionnaire is confusing or what you do not understand about the module list, so that we can find mistakes as quickly as possible and improve user friendliness for you. You can also contact us via email if you have concerns.
What is the difference between the quick view and detailed view?
Starting in the WS 2009/2010, the use of StOEHn was expanded by an additional page, the quick view. This page offers you the possibility to make entries through just a form page. This way, you can click through the questionnaire more quickly and clearly.
The quick view is possible after you have chosen your modules.
You can choose the quick view or detailed view to input your data at any time. It does not affect how the data is evaluated.
Why does the evaluation ask about previous education related to certain modules?
Any previous knowledge, for example job training, an advanced course, practical training, or volunteer work, can minimize your workload. Since this previous knowledge tends to be individual, and we are interested in assessing the average workload, this type of information can be important if your workload is much less than other participants.
Common Questions About the Data Input
What is a contact hour?
45 minutes correspond to one contact hour. This unit applies to courses at the university.
Example: If you had a 90 minute class, ten times, then enter "20" in the corresponding workload (Aufwand) field.
What is an hour?
60 minutes correspond to one hour. This applies to time spent studying outside outside of class.
Example: If you needed 15.5 hours for independent/self study, then enter “16” in the corresponding field.
What should be entered under "Klasur"?
If you had an exam, enter the number of contact hours. Ignore the entry field until then.
How do I correctly enter effort/time spent?
Above the table, you will see when you logged in last. In the table, you can enter your work load that occurred for the module in the meantime in the entry field. The entries are automatically added to the number next to the box. Corrections are possible for negative numbers that were entered.
What do the symbols mean?
The traffic light colors with symbols in the background show the status of your entries.
Green: You entered valid entries for your workload.
Yellow: You still need to enter your workload.
Red: Incorrect input, please correct your entry.
