Modular Registration Processes for Bachelor and Master Students

As a student in a Bachelor or Master course of study, you register through the modular registration processes in CAMPUS Office. Under the heading “Prüfungsordnungen”, pick out your exam regulations and register for the exams that correspond to the correct module. Ordinarily, you are required to register for the exam components (exam, final paper, etc) as well as for the course (lecture, seminar, etc). You can find more detailed information in your exam regulations, which you can find under Official Announcements. You can also contact your departmental student advising if you have more questions.

Please be aware that the registration deadlines are not uniform.  They can vary among registration processes.  Consult your modular registration process, to see which deadline applies to you.

The registration deadlines are all handled in the general examination regulations: Under the guidelines of the "Orientierungsabmeldung", you are able to cancel your registration for an exam up until the last Friday in November for the Winter semester and the last Friday in May for the Summer semester, without the ZPA recording your registration.  A cancellation after the Orientierungsabmeldung is only possible through a withdrawl or doctor’s note. You can find more general information about this on the page Registration Cancellation & Withdrawl. Consult your exam regulations, found under Official Announcements, to find out which guidelines apply to your course of study.

Exception for "Old" Master Courses of Study

All of the "old" Master courses of study are an exception to the registration process, that is all examination regulation versions from 2006 or older: If you are enrolled in one of these courses of study, register for your exams via the VZPA or in person in the ZPA. The modular registration process does not apply to you.  Please refer to the Registration Modalities page to find out which process applies to your course of study.

Automatic Reregistration

For Bachelor and Master courses of study, the ZPA implements automatic reregistrations, so-called compulsory registration, for the next exam date.  This pertains to you, if you did not pass an exam or if you withdrew from an exam (e.g. with a doctor's note).

Automatic reregistration for the summer semester takes place at the beginning of June, and for the winter semester at the beginning of December in registration period.  Please note, that the ZPA cannot notify you specifically about this registration.  You can view the registration in CAMPUS Office under „Angemeldete Prüfungen“.

Automatic Reregistration

If the exam and repeat exam take place within one semester, then automatic reregistration witll take place after grades from the first exam have been entered.

If the exam and repeat exam take place in different semesters, then automatic reregistration takes place in the registration period of the summer semester at the beginning of June and in the winter semester at the beginning of December.

Please note that the ZPA cannot specifically notify you of this registration in all cases.  You can view the registration in CAMPUS Office under Zentrales Prüfungsamt", " Angemeldete Prüfungen".

Bachelor Thesis Registration

You must have successfully finished a Bachelor course of study to be able to enroll in a Master course of study.  You can find information about the prerequisites for a Master's here

When you register your Bachelor thesis, please take into consideration the time it will take to complete it and the evaluation period.  The following rule of thumb is recommending when registering your thesis: Latest possible date for registration = end of the semester - (8 weeks evaluation period + time it takes to complete the thesis) .

Supplemental Oral Exam for Bachelor and Master Students

Most Bachelor and Master exam regulations allow for a supplemental oral exam. You can take advantage of this, if you have not passed the second written exam.  By successfully participating in and completing the supplemental oral exam, you can receive a grade of 4.0 for the exam you failed twice before.

Check with your exam regulations, found under Official Announcements, to see which guidelines apply to you and whether you are allowed to complete a supplemental oral exam. Please contact your departmental advisor if you have questions regarding this. You can find more information on the page Supplemental Oral Exam.

Registering through the Virtual Central Examination Office (VZPA)

If you are in the courses of study being phased out: Diplom, Magister or teacher training program courses of study, you can register online in CAMPUS-Office through the VZPA. In some exceptions,  registration through the VZPA is also possible for Bachelor and Master courses of study.  This is possible between December 5- December 16, 2011.

Please note that, registration through the VZPA is usually required for students in the courses of study being phased out and in Master’s programs, who have exam regulations up to and including 2006.  Registration through the VZPA is only possible for students in Bachelor and Master courses of study in certain cases.

Further information about the Virtual Central Examination Office can be found here.

Students in the Diplom, Magister, or Teacher Training programs concluding with a Staatsexamen typically register for exams in person in the ZPA during the first two weeks of June for the summer semester and the first two weeks of December for the winter semester.  There is an exception for Teacher Training courses of study in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities concluding with the Staatsexamen.

You can find registration forms or exam numbers for registration in person in the form database.

Registration FAQs

Can I register for or cancel an exam via telephone?

No, you can neither register for nor cancel an exam via telephone. However, depending on the degree and registration guidelines for your course of study, you can register online through the modular registration process, through the VZPA, in person in the ZPA, or via fax or mail, all within the deadline. Please pay attention to information on the page Registration Modalities.

Cancellations are likewise possible online through the VZPA, in person in the ZPA, and via mail or fax.

If you are registering or cancelling via mail or fax, please include your student ID number, the exam subject and a copy of your student ID, and sign the request.  Please pay attention to the appropriate deadline.

How do I find out, how and where I need to register for an exam?

Registration procedures can be found in your exam regulations. All relevant information from the ZPA can be found on the page Registration Modalities. Normally, your examiner will also share these with you. If neither of these helps you, please contact your departmental advising.

I've registered for a course (e.g. a lecture or lab) through CAMPUS. Do I also need to separately register for the exam?

That depends on which course of study and degree program you are enrolled in.

Bachelor-Master Courses of Study: Please refer to your exam regulations to see which registration is necessary or contact your departmental advisor. Generally you register for a course and its exam.  In some instances, you will be registered for a particular modular exam registration process automatically.

Old Master Courses of Study (exam regulations up to and including 2006): Your exam registration takes place through the VZPA or in person in the ZPA. More information can be found on the page Registration Modalities.

Diplom, Magister and Teacher Training Courses of Study (Staatsexamen): You can only register for courses through the modular process, provided that the instructors have created a modular registration process for you. Modular registration for exams is not possible for you.  Thus, please register for your exams either through the VZPA or in person in the ZPA. More information can be found on the page Registration Modalities.

If you are in a teacher training course of study in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Staatsexamen), different exam registration regulations apply to you.  You can find them above under " Registration for Students in Teacher Training Courses of Study in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Staatsexamen)“.

How do I find out if I am registered for an exam?

Log into CAMPUS Office. Under the heading "Zentrales Prüfungsamt" you can view "Angemeldete Prüfungen", under which you can view the exams you are registered for.

What do I do in order to take an exam to improve my grade or to choose to take an exam?

Grade improvements are an exception and are only possible for a few old courses of study.  Refer to your exam regulations or contact your departmental advisor, to find out whether you are eligible for a grade improvement.

What is an automatic re-registration (compulsory registration)?

If you do not pass an exam or cancel your registration for an exam, the ZPA automatically re-registers you, as a student in a Bachelor or Master course of study, for the next exam date.

Why can't I see my exam registration, even though I registered for the course in CAMPUS?

If the modular exam registration process applies to you, and you have registered, then your registration can first be viewed at the start of the registration period.

The ZPA has to transfer modular registrations from CAMPUS into the exam registration system.  Only then will you be able to see your exam registrations in CAMPUS Office under "Angemeldete Prüfungen".  More information is available under Viewing & Recording Exam Registrations.
