The Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, IGCS for short, was opened at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai in 2010, at the initiative of the German and Indian governments. Plans exist to fund the center till the end of 2017 as part of the DAAD initiative A New Passage to India with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The IGCS is currently in its second funding period.

Aside from IIT Madras, the TU9 universities and the University of Kiel or CAU are also involved in the project.

RWTH Aachen, which has had a partnership with IIT Madras since 1959, is responsible for the center's organization on the German center.

Profile

IGCS' research focus is on sustainability projects in the fields of water and waste management, land use and sustainable urban development and energy. Two defining features of the IGCS are transdisciplinary research and German-Indian academic exchange.

The center simultaneously serves both as a platform for research and as an educational institution for students, doctoral candidates, and scientists, and as a hub for further networking in the topic of sustainability. About 460 students and researchers from both countries have had the opportunity so far to successfully participate in summer and winter schools, symposia, and research stays to establish research cooperations and networks. Local and global insights are equally important.

The collaboration between industry and science is reflected in the IGCS Research School for Sustainable Power Engineering at IITM, funded by the company Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen in Regensburg.

Funding Possibilities

Mobility funds for study abroad, research and teaching stays, joint summer and winter schools, and scientific workshops support the creation of a network and research collaboration between German universities and IIT Madras in the areas named above.

Here you can find some testimonials of people and projects receiving funding at the IGCS.

Please Note

Double funding for a stay abroad for students or graduates from different RWTH Aachen scholarship programs or other public funding organizations, such as DAAD or PROMOS, is not allowed. Program participants are also barred from accepting an ERASMUS scholarship, Germany scholarship, or similar funding simultaneously. Other public or private secondary scholarships are typically substracted from the DAAD scholarship amount.
