Doctorate Supplement

What is the doctorate supplement?

The Doctorate Supplement is an addition to your Doctorate Diploma and is only valid in combination with the diploma. It documents all of your extracurricular qualifications that you acquired during the program.  This includes, for example, language courses, intercultural trainings, or research seminars.

What is the purpose of the doctorate supplement?

The Doctorate Supplement can serve as proof of your interdisciplinary education whenever you apply somewhere else.  The CDS issues the Doctorate Supplement, and it is signed by the Vice-Rector of Human Resources Management and Development, as well as the dean of your faculty.

Certificates of Performance

After every event that you successfully complete, you will receive a certificate of participation.  Please discuss with your supervisor which courses or events you should attend and have him or her confirm these.  This is part of the supervisory role for doctoral studies and is a condition on which you receive your Doctorate Supplement.
Courses you successfully completed that were not part of the CDS program are also recognized in the Doctorate Supplement.  Courses you take through faculties or other providers can be certified just like practical career experiences.  The only requirement to keep in mind is that your faculty needs to recognize these courses.

How to Get Your Doctorate Supplement

1. Plan out your individual doctoral studies program with your primary supervisor.  Please keep in mind the minimum requirements set by your faculty.
2.  Register with the CDS with the registration form, statement of consent form for personal data use, and the confirmation from your supervisor.
3. You receive an e-mail confirmation of your registration.
4. Choose the courses you would like to attend and register for them online
5. At the end of your doctoral studies, provide an outline of your Doctorate Supplement.  Please list all the courses you completed or skills you achieved during your doctoral studies in the form.  Your primary supervisor confirms this with CDS.  Finally, the CDS will provide written recognition of your achievements.
6. You will receive the Doctorate Supplement, as soon as you turn in all of your certificates of performance and participation and your doctorate diploma has been issued. Since the faculty does not automatically notify the CDS about the generation of your doctoral diploma, let CDS know, when you have received your diploma. Your doctorate supplement will then be promptly completed.

The Doctorate Supplement Form

Within the Doctorate Supplement Form different areas are listed in which you can acquire skills or complete courses.  Categories include key skills, project work, teaching activities, and publications.  If necessary, you can add additional categories.  Please make sure that any categories you add are formatted with the two necessary columns.

Formal Requirements

  • Please complete the form carefully and pay attention to the instructions in it.
  • Please send a copy of the document signed by your supervisor to the CDS, Templergraben 55, 52062 Aachen.
  • Please inform the CDS that you have finished your doctoral studies as soon as possible.
  • Participation in the CDS is a requirement for receiving the Doctorate Supplement and is also established in the Doctoral Studies Guidelines from the faculties.  However, registration with the CDS has absolutely no effect on your acceptance to a doctoral studies program.
