The goal of this course of study of the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the broad training of mechanical engineers, who may be employed in all technical fields in the industry in research and development as well as in production and distribution.

The Master programs are scientific, research-oriented degree programs, aligned towards basic principles and methods. They enable students to be successful professionally successful over their entire career, because they are not restricted to learning current material, but also learn theoretical underlying fundamental concepts and methods, that last longer than current trends.

The General Mechanical Engineering course of study, ending in a Master of Science degree, particularly prepares students for a professional career in research and development. The education is strongly focused on the fundamentals of the natural sciences, technology development, and engineering methods, and is supplemented through interdisciplinary content. A solid basis of engineering knowledge in mechanical engineering is ensured through a defined framework of mandatory subjects and focus modules.

Degree Content

The three semester long course of study is broken down into two parts. During the two semester examination period, students should complete all mandatory and elective modules. In the final and third semester, students independently work on a defined research topic and finish their Master's thesis.

The curriculum is oriented towards students' individual interests, and is supplemented through the respective subject combinations and specializations and must be approved by the course of study advisor and examination board at the beginning of studies. The following specializations are offered:

  • Medical Technology
  • Microsystems Technology
  • Simulation Technology
  • Fluid Power Technology
  • Materials Engineering

An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study. Detailed information is also available on the Department of Medical Technology website.

Prerequisites

A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.

Examination Regulations

Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.

Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
