Cross-Registration
Cross-registration- a student's right to attend courses at another German university, in addition to their studies at their home university. Certain cross-registered students may complete exams from the courses at the second university, while other cross-registered students may complete a course of study at the second university, in addition to the initial course of study.
In order to cross-register at RWTH Aachen, you need prove that you are already registered at another university within Germany, and that you are not simultaneously taking a leave of absence.
Big and Small Cross-Registered Students
Students, who are primarily enrolled at another university, can be admitted by submitting the application for cross-registration (de). They are allowed to take courses and exams. Cross-registered students are separated into big cross-registered students and small cross-registered students.
Big cross-registered students may take exams. Completion of a degree at the second univeristy is possible.
Small Cross-Registered Students
In contrast to big cross-registered students, small cross-registered students are not allowed to take exams and cannot be enrolled in the same course of study. Small cross-registered students are only allowed to take these classes and can only take exams in these courses.

Common Questions about Cross-Registration
How do I apply for cross-registration?
Fill out the application for cross registration (de) and send a hard copy to the Registrar's Office. Please make note of the current deadlines. You can also turn in the application in person. You do not need to provide a record of payment.
What documents do I need to include when I apply for cross-registration?
In addition to an application for dual enrollment (de), those cross-registered students allowed to complete exams need to submit their enrollment certificate from their primary university. Those cross-registered completing an additional course of study need to provide a notarized copy of their university admission certificate.
RWTH Aachen is my primary university. I would like to cross-register at another university. Do I need to notify RWTH of this?
No, RWTH does not need to be notified.
Can I cross-register in any course of study?
Cross-registation is a restricted degree program is not possible (Single exception: Students, who are primarily enrolled in a teacher training program for athletics, art, or music at another university in NRW).
Is cross-registration free?
At RWTH Aachen, cross-registered students allowed to take exams, who are enrolled at another university, pay a fee of €100 per semester. Those cross-registered students completing an additional course of study are not required to pay a fee.
