Private-Sector Accommodation
The present web page provides you with information on finding accommodation in the private sector.Towards the end of the page, there are a few links and documents to assist you with finding a room or flat.
The City of Aachen and the Location of RWTH Buildings
Aachen has about 250,000 inhabitants, 180,000 of whom live in the inner city district. As RWTH is not a campus university, most of its building are also located across the city. Thus, students may have to move between buildings variously located throughout the city, e.g. by bus, by bike, on foot, or by car. Thus, when looking for accommodation, it may be useful to find a place situated near the university building(s) that you will visit the most.
There is a link which provides you with an overview of all major university buildings; with the help of this map, you can identify in which part of the city "your" institute / lecture halls are located.
Please note
Most typically, the rent does not include additional costs for light, heating, etc. This especially applies to single-and multi-room apartments. Please read the ad carefully and, if in doubt about additional costs, ask the landlord and/or the previous tenant about them.
Please note
Check carefully whether the offer lives up to your expectations: is the room/apartment furnished? What about the lease period? Does the rent include all additional costs, such as heating and lighting? Do I have to pay a commission fee?
Costs of Accommodation - Rental Prices
The City of Aachen publishes a rental costs guideline (link in German) providing an overview of the average monthly rent for different types of accommodation. Please note that the prices quoted in this leaflet are given per square meter and taking the age of the building into account. To get a good overview, you should compare the rental prices of available rooms/flats.
Overview - Average Rent
