Through its accommodation service, the Innternational Office seeks to support you in finding a place to live. Please note however that it is not possible for us actively to arrange accommodation for our students and visiting scholars.

Guest Houses of the University

RWTH Aachen has Guest Houses with a limited number of rooms and apartments for international visitors and visiting scholars of the university. Please ask your host institute to make a reservation enquiry for you early on, i.e. well in advance of your arrival.

Living in a Hall of Residence

Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to move into accommodation provided by Studentenwerk, the local student services organisation, at least for the initial stages of their degree programme or their doctorate.

Due to the high demand, preferential treatment will be given to scholarships holders who travel to Aachen direct from their home country and who are provided with a small stipend only. For this reason, we are not able to guarantee university accommodation.

If you wish to get a place in a Hall of Residence, you must apply to Studentenwerk Aachen. You can do so by using the Accommodation Request form.

Before Studentenwerk will be able to process your application, the International Office must receive a formal confirmation by the organisation that funds your scholarship. This statement must include details about the funding period, i.e. the start and end date of your scholarship. Having received this statement, the International Office will notify Studentenwerk that you are eligible to apply for a place in a hall of residence.

Please note that:

  • the number of available rooms/flats is limited
  • tenancy always commences on the first of a month
  • Studentenwerk is responsible for all terms and conditions for the lease (contractual matters, rent, etc.)
  • Studentenwerk is able to provide you with details on rooms and flats, such as location, furnishings and fittings of the room, etc.

Please also note: that the maximum period of residence in university accommodation is between six months and one year at the most. If you stay at RWTH for a longer period of time, you will have to find new accommodation (typically in the private sector) before the end of the rental period (please observe the period of notice!).

Finding Private-Sector Accommodation

If Student Services is not able to offer you university accommodation, it becomes necessary for you to seek housing in the private sector.
