Research Clusters
In the period between 2010 and 2017, up to 19 clusters, complete with science facilities, office buildings, and integrated support spaces will be developed on the 800,000 m² extension site, taking collaboration with industry onto a new level.
Up to 250 national and international companies will have the chance to establish research and development centers on campus and to develop research alliances with local university departments and institutes.
Research Collaboration between Companies and University Institutions
As powerhouses of innovation, the research clusters constitute the "scientific core" of RWTH Aachen Campus. Research clusters are thematic research networks which provide businesses and university departments with the opportunity to conduct joint projects and develop new processes and products collaboratively. Simultaneously, employees of the research partners are included in education and further trainin on the Campus.
Increase in Proximity to Practice
The clusters are committed to long-term, interdisciplinary research in certain core areas, in co-operation with partners from industry and business. This novel way of collaborating enhances the relevance and practical application of research in special subject areas. Further, the clusters provide a basis for the safe and efficient assessment of new technologies with regard to their risks and opportunities and facilitate decisions on the their evolution and maturation. In addition, the joint utilization of resources opens up potentials for synergy.
In summary, the clusters constitute theme-driven "research hot spots" comprising teams of highly qualified staff and state-of-the-art research facilities.
