General Information About the Scholarship Program
Who can apply?
Eligible to apply are RWTH students as well as future students taking up their studies. The application period is from June 1 to 30.
Can I apply if I am an international student?
Yes, if you are enrolled or received admission for studies at RWTH Aachen.
I am enrolled for a postgraduate supplementary course or a second degree (Aufbaustudium/Zweitstudium). Can I apply?
Yes. All types of degree programs and part-time degrees are eligible.
I am a doctoral candidate. Can I apply?

I will exceed the typical length of study during the funding period. Can I still be funded?
Yes, you must currently be within the typical length of study during entire funding period, that is winter semester 2017/2018 and summer semester 2018. In difficult cases, such as handicap or longterm illness, pregnancy, caring for or raising a child, or a stay abroad, the maximum duration of funding can be extended for one semester.
Applications must be submitted before the application period ends, that is June 30. Please use the following form.
I am enrolled at another university. Can I apply?
No. Application is only possible for enrolled RWTH Aachen students.
What does funding encompass?
The Germany Scholarship encompasses financial support of 300 Euros monthly. RWTH Aachen, together with the donors, additionally offers an ideal framework program.
I am planning a leave of absence for one semester during the scholarship period. Can I apply?
Yes, if the leave of absence is being taken for a subject-related stay abroad, you can continue to receive scholarship funds. This includes studies at a university or language school abroad, a stay abroad in the framework of an exchange program, such as Erasmus for example, or an internship abroad that is being completed to fulfill certain study requirements and to gain credit for the completion of your degree, all of at least four months' duration.
If you wish to take a leave of absence during the scholarship period, you must apply for continuation of the scholarship during the leave period. The application must be received by October or April 30 of each semester of leave. For your application, please use the following form.
I am planning to complete an internship during the funding period. Can this be funded?
Yes, however you cannot be taking a leave of absence at the same time. A leave of absence is only permissible if you are completing an internship abroad.
During the winter semester I will still be within the regular length of studies - as in my studies will finish at the end of winter semester in accordance with academic schedule. Can I apply for a scholarship?
In this case you can only receive funding from the Education Fund if you complete your Bachelor's degree in the winter semester and then continue with a Master's course of stuy in the summer semester – or – if your request for funding beyong the typical length of studies was granted – please see the question "I will exceed the typical length of study during the funding period. Can I still be funded?".
Otherwise funding cannot be granted, since scholarships are granted on a yearly basis. A requirement for being funded is that you are enrolled for at least two further semesters during the typical length of studies at RWTH Aachen.
I will successfully complete my studies during the funding period. What do I need to do?
You are required to immediately inform us once you have completed your studies. The date to note is the date when the overall results of your completed degree is announced – such as the date the grade is entered by the ZPA. The scholarship will discontinue at the end of the month, in which this announcement was made. Funding will end no later than the end of second month after the month in which you completed your last examination. We will require you to submit documentation of the date of your last exam.
I am terminating my studies during the funding period. What do I need to do?
You are required to immediately inform us once you have terminated your studies. Your scholarship will discontinue at the end of the month in which you terminated your studies.
Combinations with Other Funding Programs
I am already receiving a scholarship from an organization, promoting gifted students. Am I eligible to apply?
That depends on the type of support and on the funding amount you are receiving. If you receive skills or performance based support materials, amounting to 30 euros per month or more on average, you cannot receive an Education Fund scholarship.
If you receive funding from one of the following institutions, you are also not eligible to apply:
- Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft
- Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes
- Ernst-Ludwig-Ehrlich-Stiftung e.V.
- Evangelisches Studienwerk Haus Villigst
- Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit
Please note that this rule only applies if you receive financial support. Purely non-material support is allowed.
Can I apply if I simultaneously receive a DAAD scholarship during the funding period?
According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, partial scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD for short, can be arranged with the Germany Scholarship. They align with the goal of mobility funding and supporting the internationalization of courses of study. Combinations are possible with the following scholarships:

I am planning on completing a double Master abroad with the TIME program. Is the TIME program compatible with the Education Fund?
Yes, the TIME program is compatible with funding from the Education Fund.
I am planning on completed a double Master's at Tsinghua. Is the double Master's program compatible with the Education Fund?
Yes, the double Master's at Tsinghua University is compatible with funding from the Education Fund. Please note that an additional DAAD scholarship for this stay abroad is not compatible with funding from the Education Fund. Please contact us if this pertains to you.
I receive a BAFöG allowance. Does this affect the amount of a Education Fund scholarship?
No. If you receive Education Fund funding, you can do so without any deductions.
General Online Application Information
What documents do I need for the online application?
Please fill out the online aplication and upload the following application documents:
- University entrance certificate or school diploma
- Bachelor diploma (only for applicants in a Master's degree program)
- If applicable: academic records/transcripts with grades. For RWTH students a printout from the CAMPUS system is acceptable)
- Certificates/documents providing evidence of internships and work experience, as well as extracurricular activities and other skills
- For international students: Certificate for Admission to Study at RWTH
The application documents must be submitted in one PDF file with a maximum size of 5 MB.
Can I be funded after the first year?
Yes, but you must reapply. Note in the online application that you were funded the previous year through the Education Fund.
I am completing my Bachelor's studies at RWTH Aachen in winter semester 2017/2018 and will begin my Master's studies at RWTH Aachen in summer semester 2018. Can I apply in June?
Yes, it is possible to apply and be continuously funded. Apply in June using the online form. In order to receive funding during the first Master's semester, that is during summer semester 2018, you must re-submit the online application in February 2018. This is exclusively open to Germany scholarship grantholders.
What grades are requested in the online application?
Please only enter your average grade and the ECTS points you acquired in winter semester 2016/2017. Credits from summer semester 2017 are not included in the evaluation. The cut-off date is March 31, 2017.
Is there a selection period for the summer semester too?
No. Scholarships are only awarded annually each winter semeter.
Is a minimum GPA required to apply?
No. The required GPA depends on the number and quality of applications. For this reason, we cannot provide any GPA values for guidance. We encourage students to submit their applications regardless of their GPA.
Is it possible to find out whether one is ranked in the top 20 percent of students before submitting an application?
No, unfortunately that is not possible.
I just obtained my University Entrance Qualification (Abitur, A-levels, or equivalent) and will commence my studies at RWTH Aachen in the winter term 2017/2018. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes. Please use the application period from June 1 to 30, 2017 for prospective students.
If your application is successful, you will have to submit an RWTH Aachen enrollment certificate at a later stage.
My Abitur certificate was not issued at the time of application. Can I still apply?
Yes. Please send us your certificate as soon as you have received it.
I am a student at RWTH Aachen and would like to change my course of study in the next semester. Am I eligible to apply? What form do I need to fill out?
Yes, please make a note of the change in your online application.
I applied before an Education Fund scholarship before but was rejected. Can I apply again?
Yes. Please mention that you are a first time applicant.
I am studying a two-subject Bachelor's/Master's, a second subject, or am a teacher training student. Which subject will be considered during the selection process?
In this case, you should pick, with which subject you wish to apply for a scholarship. Only the subject you provide will be considered during the selection process. You list additional subjects in the field "Studienlaufbahn." Please note that applicants are limited to one application per person.
During my last Bachelor's semester during winter semester 2016/17, I completed Master's modules early. How should I include the Master's modules in my application?
Please add the ECTS points for the Master's modules from winter semester 2016/17 in the Campus Office System to the Bachelor's ECTS points and enter them in the field "Gesamtzahl der ECTS-Punkte einschließlich WS 2016/2017." When you are asked to enter your average grade, enter the average grade for your Bachelor's studies. If this not yet final, enter your average Bachelor's grade from winter semester 2016/17.
Problems Completing the Online Application Form
The pdf document won't upload. What do I do?
This can be due to a poor conversion of the documents. In this case, we ask you to please re-convert your application, for example using the PDF-Blender program to pdf form and re-upload them in a single pdf.
I forgot something while filling out my application or want to modify my application. What do I do?
Please complete the form once again. We will only take the most recent of your applications into consideration.
How do I know whether I successfully submitted my application?
Once we have received your application, we will send a confirmation email, including your application number. Please keep this email until the scholarship selection process is complete. Please note that the application number is necessary for future reference.
If you have not received this confirmation email, please contact us immediately so we can check whether the application was received.
Am I expected to pay back my scholarship after I have completed my studies?
Are there any scholarship conditions and requirements defined, such as by the sponsors?
No. The stipend is awarded without taking the student's financial and family situation into account. Scholarship winners do not have to enter into any agreements with the sponsors. However, we do invite recipients and sponsors to establish contact with one another.
Do scholarships influence the child-care allowance (Kindergeld)?
Since January 1, 2012, all earnings and stipends, including the Germany Scholarship, no longer influence the child-care allowance. In accordance with the Simplifying Tax Act (Steuervereinfachungsgesetz) 2012, the income audit for children of age to the conclusion of a first vocational training or studies no longer exists. More information on this can be found in the BMF letter on Section 32 Paragraph 4 Einkommensteuergesetz from December 7, 2011.
The Germany Scholarship was taken into consideration during the awarding of the child-care allowance, until January 1, 2012. However it was under the tax exempt amount 8004 euros, without the further calculation of other sources of income.
Is the scholarship taxed?
The Scholarship Program Act is arranged in such a way, so that the Germany Scholarship is not taxed and is not affected by social tax liability. Exceptions may reslts from certain configurations of private, state-recognized universities. Please clear up any tax related questions with your tax advisor.
Is the scholarship counted against other social services?
No. The Germany Scholarship is not calculated against other social services, for example Arbeitslosengeld II. However housing allowances are an exception.
Can I receive a housing allowance and the scholarship at the same time?
Yes. Individuals receiving a housing allowance must note howeer, that half of the Germany Scholarship, like other scholarships, is included in the calculation of annual income. Please contact your responsible housing allowance office for more information on the topic of scholarships and housing allowance.
