SelfAssessment
RWTH Aachen self assessments are online advising processes for deciding what to study. Participation in one (rarely two) of these self assessments is mandatory. You can find which self assessment you need to take for this subject in the course of study description under "Prerequisites". You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.

Dates and Deadlines
Studies provide an overview of the disciplinary and methodological basics of teaching French. Students will become familiar with central questions, methods, and work techniques and learn to independently expand this knowledge.
This education is supplemented through advancement and expansion of foreign language skills, which encompases contrastive language reflection and methods for language training. Furthermore, students will require the ability to critically prepare text content and to teach it.
Studying French as a subject to teach does not simply help students learn language skills, which must be independently solidified and advanced, above all during a stay abroad, for exams an Erasmus semester. These studies demand much of students and require critical examination of subject content in sub-areas of literary studies, linguistics, and cultural studies, as well as in foreign language pedagogy. Mastering and expanding these language skills supports students, for example in attending courses held in French.
Degree Content
During Bachelor studies, students successively learn theoretical and methodological basics in disciplinary sub-fields as well as further language skills. Master's studies continue, building on this foundation.
Study Abroad:
Studying French as an instructional subject includes an at least three month study abroad in a French speaking country. Proof of one's stay abroad must be submitted by the time certificates are handed out. The details of the study abroad can be cleared up with the departmental student advising. If a student is studying two of the instructional subjects English, French, or Spanish, one study abroad is sufficient. Moveonline Exchanges database is helpful if you want an overview of all RWTH Aachen exchange programs.
Combination Possibilities
Two of the following instructional subjects are combined in studies for teachers at Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen: biology, chemistry, German, English, French, history, computer science, Catholic religious education, math, physics, and Spanish. Every subject can be equally combined with another. Course of Study Model Lehramt at Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen (de)

Suitability Experience
In the future, teaching training in NRW will include a so called “Suitability Experience,” which is recommended to be completed before the beginning of a student’s studies. This is not a requirement for studies. That means: it does not have to have been completed at the time of enrollment. It can be completed during the course of study, and must be completed before the start of the teaching practice or internship (after studies). More information is available on the Lehrerbildungszentrum page about the suitability experience and in the Ministry of Schools brochure.
Prerequisites
Personal Prerequisites
Above all, students should enjoy French, both orally and in written texts and content. Independent study aside from the demands of the curriculum is the best prerequisite for both academic success during studies and for a later career as a teacher.
Enrollment Prerequisite
The RWTH Aachen "Lehramt" Self Assessment is an enrollment prerequisite for this course of study. You will need to submit your participation certificate when you enroll, but not in order to apply.
Language Requirements:
Latin: In order to participate in certain modules during the third year of Bachelor studies, students must submit proof of Latin skills at a level of 2. This is possible through either a Latinum or an exam at RWTH Aachen. Student can acquire Latin skills while completing their studies or in our bridge courses. Master's studies require the Latinum.
French: Studies take place primarily in German - some individual courses take place in French. We highly recommend that students possess at least a B1 level of Common European Framework for Reference of Languages (Europäische Referenzrahmen) in French at the start of their studies.
Career Prospects
You can find information from the NRW Ministry of Schools about the career prospects for various fields of teaching through 2030 in the brochure Prognoses on the Job Market for Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Master's Degree Prospects
After successfully completing the Bachelor degree, you can continue with the Master of Education (4 semesters). With this degree, you can start your teaching practice (This phase used to be called "Refendariat" instead of "Vorbereitungsdienst".)
Since your Bachelor degree opens up various futher education possibilities, you can - depending on your subject combination - persue other Master's programs. The respective exam board will decide whether or not you are qualified for a Master's that is not in the field of education.
Examination Regulations
Exam regulations regulate academic goals and prerequisites, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
