SelfAssessment
RWTH Aachen self assessments are online advising processes for deciding what to study. Participation in one (rarely two) of these self assessments is mandatory. You can find which self assessment you need to take for this subject in the course of study description under "Prerequisites". You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.
Dates and Deadlines
Chemistry is the sciences of substances and their transformation. It investigatse molecular processes in non-living and living nature and builds the foundation for very different areas that are economically and socially important, for agrochemicals to high-tech materials, from pharmaceuticals to energy sources.
Start of Studies
Students' start in the Bachelor course of study in Chemistry is supported through the following services:
- Through a chemistry bridge course, RWTH Aachen offers students the possibility to refresh or intensify their school knowledge in the relevant subjects. The bridge course takes place before the start of every winter semester and lasts three weeks.
- Through mentoring conversations, first-year students meet lecturers from the Department of Chemistry. Students can contact their mentor if they have questions or problems.
- Excercises are completed in small group tutorials, under the direction of an advanced student. These exercises serve to intensify the learning and understanding of material in the first semester.
Degree Content
The Bachelor course of study in Chemistry encompasses six semesters and provides students with the basic knowledge of chemical subdisciplines as well as solid basic knowledge in mathematics and physics. The course of study is rounded out with non-chemistry modules, in which foreign language or computer skills, knowledge in economic or law, or presentation experiences can be acquired.
In the first two semesters, the modules "General Chemistry" provide students with the fundamental principles of the basic subjects inroganic, organic, and physical chemistry, both in theory and practice. Students simultaneously acquire basic skills in mathematics and physics.
The following four semesters are dedicated to the intensive stufy of basic subjects - and in accordance with the profile of a technical university - technical chemistry and macromolecular chemistry. The practical command of chemical work techniques plays an important role in each subject. The Bachelor course of study is completed in the sixth semester with the Bachelor thesis.
Prerequisites
Personal Prerequisites
Beginning students should enjoy scientific problems and have fun when combining practice and theory. In addition to previous knowledge of chemistry, school-level knowledge of physics, mathematics, and English are also helpful. High demands in lectures, exercises, and practical experiences, as well as organizational requirements in one's daily routine during lecture-periods, fill out the work week. Motivation for studies and good self-organization help students master these demands.
Enrollment Prerequisite
RWTH "Mathematics and Natural Sciences" Self Assessment
Master's Degree Prospects
In accord with the research focuses of chemistry at RWTH Aachen, four specializations are offered in the Master course of study:
- Bioactive Compounds and Synthetic Methods (SYN)
- Catalysis (CAT)
- Materials and Mesoscopic Systems: Solids, Polymers, and Nanostructures (MES)
- Computer Chemistry and Spectroscopy (COS)
Two of these four specializationas can be combined. In each specialization, students complete an introductory lecture and research internship. The research internship takes places in a work group and for a current research topic, that is located in the respective specialization. Students will learn how to independently complete research plans and run trials.
Additional RWTH Aachen courses, that are nto part of the Bachelor of Master course of study in Chemistry, are taken as electives. Electives make it possible for students to reach a scientific niveau in non-chemistry matters, to a suitable extent.
Examination Regulations
Exam Regulations regulate academic goals and prerequisites, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
Faculty
The Bachelor course of study in Chemistry is offered by the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences.
