SelfAssessment
RWTH Aachen self assessments are online advising processes for deciding what to study. Participation in one (rarely two) of these self assessments is mandatory. You can find which self assessment you need to take for this subject in the course of study description under "Prerequisites". You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.
Dates and Deadlines
The Bachelor course of study in Business Administration and Engineering: Electrical Power Engineering teaches students to work with solution oriented problems and technical questions. The diversity of possible fields for an industrial engineer is reflected in the course of study, in which students are educated as generalists, with knowledge in engineering and economics. The Bachelor course of study is a career enabling education, and should, for the most part, prepare students for the following Master course of study, in which the knowledge a student gained in the Bachelor course of study is advanced.
The Aachen Profile
At RWTH Aachen, students in the Bachelor course of study in Business Administration and Engineering: Electrical Power Engineering, learn all the relevant fundamentals, which open up a broad spectrum to them of additional possible specializations. For this reason, an early, or at least gross immersion into the electrical energy engineering field is practical. The curriculum is focused on knowledge relevant for a job in the energy industry, whereas it is also made certain, that there is not too strong a focus in these early stages of education. In the initial semesters, particular focus is given to the basics (math, electrical engineering, computer science, business administration), that are also necessary in the courses of study for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or business administration. The actual specialization in electrical energy engineering first takes place in the later semesters of the Bachelor course of study. The initial subject-specific knowledge serves as preparation for advancement in the subject, which takes place after the Bachelor course of study in the form of a Master course of study.
Degree Content
In the Bachelor course of study, students receive a broad background in the basics, that enables them to continue on to the Master of Science (M.Sc. RWTH).
The basics for math, the natural sciences, engineering, and economics will be taught via lectures, labs, and internshipsps, and will be advanced in further courses. It is broken down into required courses, which are unchangeable, electives, and an integration section.
Whereas the required section encompasses the basics of engineering, mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, and business administration, the elective section offers students the possibility, to further their knowledge of engineering through energy engineering lectures. In the integration section, subject content from business computer science and statistics is taught.
During a 12 week industry internship at the end of the course of study, students gather their first practical experiences in the industry. The course of study is finished with a Bachelor thesis. With this first academic paper, students prove they are able to independently work with a problem within the field of industrial engineering, within a certain period of time.
Prerequisites
Personal Prerequisite
The ability to think abstractly and analytically, penetrate complex structures, and clearly formulate one's own thoughts, are all helpful skills for studies. Good math skills and knowledge and ability and aptitude for formal, mathematical analyses are recommended. Good English skills improve the chances for success in one's studies as well as career prospects.
Enrollment Prerequisite
RWTH "Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering" Self Assessment
RWTH "Economics" Self Assessment
Students are not required to complete an internship before studies in Business Administration and Engineering: Electrical Power Engineering.
Career Prospects
As generalists with knowledge in engineering and economics, educated industrial engineers, are often sought after in many branches at the cross section of engineering and economics. According to a study by the Verband Deutscher Wirtschaftsingenieure, job offers came from all areas, including machine technology, automotive engineering, and the electrical engineering industry. Additionally, interest is growing in energy supply and consulting companies, making the subject of electrical energy engineering even more important for the future. Possible career fields include: distribution, trade, logistics, materials economics, quality control, project management, finance and accounting, revision, controlling, and consulting. Examples of diverse duties are the calculation of the probability of a technical development proposal, clarification of funding, design and securing of smooth and cost-efficient production, design and manufacture of energy supply systems, optimization of the use of facilities and work practices, evaluation of current projects, as well as product design and marketing of valuable technical goods and systems.
In the last few years, the number of enrolled students in industrial engineering has greatly increased. However, despite the higher number of graduated industrial engineers, the need of companies is not being met. This is also expected in the future. For this reason, career prospects continue to look good for graduates.
Master's Degree Prospects
After the Bachelor course of study, RWTH offers a consecutive Master with the same name.
Examination Regulations
Exam regulations regulate academic goals and prerequisites, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed. (The current version applies to all first-year students.)
