The Master’s program in Aachen focuses on optimizing value added processes. Business functions such as production or logistics make direct contributions to value creation. Equally important are functions that indirectly influence processes such as information management or economic analyses.

In recent years business value added processes have undergone lasting changes. Today, they are shaped by internationality and the effective use of state-of-the-art information technology. The growing complexity is met ideally with an efficiency-driven and company-wide organization, meaning with consistent optimization of all processes.

Degree Content

The Business Administration Master’s Program is comprised of a (compulsory) core and three (alternatively selectable) specialization areas: Supply Chain Management, International Management and Business Information Systems. These three aspects reflect the special competencies of Aachen’s economics program.

While in the core area all three aspects are given equal consideration, students can further their knowledge in one of the specializations and design their program individually. That’s what makes Aachen unique: Core and specializations mesh structurally with each other. Graduates acquire general economic tools while specializing at the same time.

Specializations

Supply Chain Management

Value added processes are becoming increasingly more efficiency driven and densely networked. If companies today operate in complex international value added networks, they sometimes provide only a small portion of the entire added value of the network. In addition to coping with their standard tasks such as production and sales, companies have to increasingly keep complete supply chains in mind. Correctly assessing the impact of exogenous actions on one’s own conduct is crucial for success: How do corporate decisions impact distant production and distribution levels? How do decisions of providers of complementary goods impact one’s own action potential? And where does new potential for action arise?

Business Information Systems

The profile of the master's program is enhanced by a strong IT focus. The use of state-of-the-art information and communication technology drastically increases creative possibilities. New strategic options not only change core processes within existing companies, they also create completely new services and business models. For this reason information technology has become one of the crucial parts of every corporate strategy.

The program in Aachen aims to strengthen the competence of its graduates in applying and assessing these resources: In the end they should not only have exact know-how of the corresponding technologies, but also the ability to correctly assess the use and feasibility of IT value creation processes in both social and economic terms. In the specializations students learn, for example, how to model company information systems or carry out software projects successfully.

The efficiency-driven orientation of supply chain management is given due consideration through the communication of quantitative methods on optimizing or controlling. Furthermore, the specialization in this area benefits from the proven competence of the faculty in the following areas: technology and innovation management and marketing and production management.

International Management

Entrepreneurial added value is becoming increasingly more international due to its economic integration. Continually increasing direct investments abroad speak just as much to this fact as does the long-term and most likely irreversible growth of import and export volumes. For large corporations and medium-sized firms the question is how to best react to this internationalization and the accompanying business challenges.

Students acquire crucial knowledge primarily in the following subjects: international personnel management, international corporate financing, foreign trade, international accounting, group taxation and international private law.
