Education Labs at RWTH AachenRWTH Aachen
Since 2010, as part of its institutional strategy of "Excellent Teaching" RWTH Aachen has established education labs in seven thematic areas of MINT subjects – or STEM disciplines in English. The goal of this endeavor is to fashion a more simple and attractive entrypoint to the academic disciplines of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology/engineering for students of all different age groups early on in their educational careers. These "adventure centers" allow them to discover fascinating areas of research and discovery in a playful and practical manner already during their school years. By 2020, the university will have added even more education labs focusing on technical or natural sciences in order to cover as many facets of the MINT disciplines as possible.
Under the direction of the Institute cluster ZLW/IMA & IfU the interdisciplinary robotics laboratory RoboScope was founded in July of 2010. This RoboScope eduLab gives students the opportunity to experience the field of robotics first hand by solving exciting tasks within a professional technical environment.
In collaboration with the Learning Technologies Research Group i9 the non-school learning space InfoSphere was formed to deal with the different aspects of computer science. The InfoSphere eduLab is tasked with making the many diverse facets of modern computer science and its applications come alive for all different age groups.
Since the summer of 2013, the Department of Mathematics MathCCES and the AICES Graduate School have also joined the ranks of the RWTH education labs with CAMMP (Computational and Mathematical Modeling Program) for problem solving with the help of mathematics. In this eduLab students creatively use mathematics and computers in solving realistic and practical problems of every-day life or from different areas of science and industry.
With Waterlab another topic area has been made available in 2014, which is maintained by the Academic and Research Department of Engineering Hydrology and the UNESCO Chair in Hydrological Change and Water Resources Management. This eduLab enables students to research the current interest topic of high flood and gain many insights with regard to the multi-faceted realm of water.
Since 2016, offers for students by the Department of Physics and the Collaborative Research Center SFB 917 are bundled together in the SCIphyLAB. This eduLab allows students a glance into natural sciences research and supports teachers in fashioning interesting and attractive physics lessons.
The faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology offers "EducationLab Workshops“, which take place right at the scientific institutes. There, students can, depending on the workshop, conduct their own small projects or experiments, get to know laboratories, and, in any case, they can experience first hand the complex operation of scientists and university students working together.
The Academic and Research Department of Didactics of Biology and Chemistry also established their own teaching and learning laboratory in 2016. In the eduLab CheERs! (Cheniale Forschung – Chemical Educational Research) students can witness first hand different research activities in the fields of chemistry and biology. In selected modules they get to experience the interdisciplinary nature of the natural sciences. By looking at natural phenomena with the school students, different topics and contexts can be rendered in an easily to understand manner, thereby kindling and supporting a sustained interest.
