Living Spaces for Students
Living and Learning Under Good Conditions
Aachen expects about 7000 additional students from 2011 to 2015. Progneses estimate that over 45000 students will be enrolled in Aachen during these years. They should all find good learning conditions at the universities and for life in Aachen. For this reason, the Aachen universities and the city are working together with students on numerous measures, in order to optimize conditions. " We welcome all first-year students," are all responsible, and are the first in North Rhine-Westphalia to prepare a comprehensive support and information packet.
Extraraum for Every Student in Aachen
The rush to Aachen's housing market - particularly starting in the 2013 winter semester - is growing. The city and universities have called for living space to be made available, through the collaborative Extraraum campaign. Investors should be particularly solicited to rebuild or remodel buildings. Private individuals are also asked to make free rooms available. The city has led discussions with potential investors now for some time. The so-called "Lotse Bauen" was incorporated into the area of city development, functioning as the central contact for questions in this area. A counterpart "Lotse Wohnen" is located within the area of living, and serves as the contact for homeowners for the topic of new housing management. The city is busy identifying former office buildings, storage areas, halls, or stores, that could be potentially converted. In case of emergency, hotels or hotel-like institutions, military barracks, or container villages will be considered as temporary accomodations for students. Individuals involved, however, are confident, that things will not come to that point. Communities neighboring Aachen - including those on the Belgian and Dutch side - have been included in the considerations and signaled their support.
