BITGRAD

The Graduate School BITGRAD is an ambitious attempt to fundamentally improve the training of 150 to 200 doctoral students of applied IT in a regional network of RWTH Aachen University, the University of Bonn and three Fraunhofer research institutes. Aiming at the goals of higher success rates, shorter times for doctoral studies, and additional scientific impact are reached, the BITGRAD approach could also serve as a pioneering example for other research-intensive IT locations.

The scientific goals are based on the observation that innovation in IT often results from a deep interaction with application fields, but also that experiences from these application fields must be reflected in novel fundamental abstractions of computer science. BITGRAD supports this duality by two inter-related layers of research areas in which the proposers are considered highly competitive on an international level. Our application focus is media and interaction technologies, mobile communication, information management and life sciences. Related fundamental topics include computer graphics, IT security, data analysis/pattern recognition, algorithm design and formal methods.
