RWTH aim's to be a Place to Be – a place where all members of the University are supported in discovering and utilizing their full potential. Place to Be builds on the "People in Movement" measure in the first funding line of the Excellence Initiative, through which the IGaD staff unit was created in 2007.

Diversity Fund

One of the measures, through which RWTH Aachen fosters its employees' diversity, is by funding doctoral positions based on the Diversity Fund for three years. Talented graduates can apply for funding, if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • be either severely disabled according to SGB IX (with a degree of severe disability of 50 or more) or persons of equal status according to § 2 section 3 SGB IX, particularly a speech or hearing impediment or
  • have non-academic parents or
  • have non-academic parents and be so-called Bildungsinländer with migration background (typically with a German university entrance qualification, i.e. a German Abiturzeugnis)

The IGaD coordinated the application and allocation process on the basis of scientific opinions, the faculties' assessment, a review panel’s report and vote, and the decision of the Rectorate. Between 2013 and 2017 a total of 18 part-time TV-L 13 positions for three years were funded. Funds are available until October 2017. Further applications will not be accepted.

Re-entry Positions für Junior Scientists After Parental Leave Have Successfully Ended

Re-entry positions offer junior scientists with a doctorate a one-year contract renewal when returning to work after parental leave. Thus, an incentive is given to return to work soon and continue one’s scientific career.

Junior scientists and their supervising professor could apply for funds under the following conditions:

  • a parental leave having lasted 6 to 12 months
  • submission of the legal labor requirements for extending a contract for one year
  • 50 percent financing of the personnel costs through the professorship or faculty
  • employment encompassing at least 50 percent of the regular weekly working hours

IGaD coordinated the successful application and grant procedure. 20 young scientists are using this instrument during the second Excellence phase from 2013 to 2017. Funding for re-entry positions will continue from November 2017 to December 2018 with bridge financing. Starting now, it is once again possible to submit applications.

The Place to Be measure is funded through the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments.
