Optimized Schedules
The increasing number of students in the double cohorts require comprehensive adjustments, above all in schedule planning. RWTH Aachen is seizing this as an opportunity to not only ensure teaching and learning conditions for students are at a habitually high level, but to also optimize schedules for students and lecturers and to use existing classrooms and study rooms in the best possible way.

Interdisciplinarity results in consistently increasing links in teaching that hamper partial solutions. Individual courses of study can hardly be individually taken into consideration with regards to resource distribution without being connected to the overall context. Schedulers for individual courses of study are given practically unsolveable tasks. Variable framework conditions such as fluctuations in demand, new lecture hall capacities due to building measures, or reduced capacities due to renovation measures require planning with multiple, different scenarios.
Planning Support for Schedulers and Lecturers
Software to support teaching and exam planning is being developed in a collaborative project with the Technical University of Berlin as part of sub-project Teaching and Exam Management, LuPO for short. This software will enable optimized lecture hall distribution to take place by winter semester 2013/2014, that takes all framework conditions into consideration.
Using the web-based planning tool carpe diem!, need-based semester planning, which places priority on the needs of students and lecturers, is enabled while taking consideration of all framework conditions. Overlaps in any mandatory areas are thus guaranteed not to occur. For the first time, lecturers have the possibility of defining their temporal availability and to define particular conditions for their course.
