Requirements for German-taught Programmes


RWTH Aachen University receives numerous applications, especially from international students. Applicants are therefore advised to submit their application as early as possible.

New: Online-Application for International Master’s Degree Programmes

Prerequisites

The established overall minimum requirements for admission are:

  • a recognised first degree from an accredited institution (Bachelor of Science or Engineering or equivalent, related to your envisaged study programme)
  • above average undergraduate work
  • German language proficiency (oral and written – DSH or TestDaF-level, see  Language Requirements.

Documents Required

In order to ensure that all students will complete their Master programmes within the allotted time frame, applicants will be carefully selected. The following documents should be submitted:

  • the online application form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required), completely filled, printed out and signed a copy of all first degree certificates.
  • a certified translation of your degree certificate in either German, English, or French, if the original is not written in one of these languages.
  • a copy of all transcripts or other academic records that give proof of your undergraduate studies including credits and grades achieved in each single subject.
  • Applicants who have completed their previous education in China must also include the Certificate of Authenticity (Echtheitsbestätigung) issued by the  Academic Acknowledgement Bureau in Beijing (Akademische Prüfstelle in Peking. Language Requirements

If you would like to attend a German-taught Master’s programme, you must be fluent in German (oral and written), in order to understand lectures, textbooks and manuals in German and to participate in lab projects,  industrial internships and examinations.

At RWTH Aachen University, the following German language certificates are sufficient for enrolment:

  • German Language University Entrance Exam for Foreign Students (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang = DSH 2 or 3)
  • Test German as a Foreign Language (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache = TestDaF)  with at least level 4 in all examination areas
  • German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers for Education and Cultural Affairs - Second Level KMK II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Zweite Stufe KMK II)
  • Basic German Language Diploma KDS (Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom = KDS), Advanced German Language Diploma GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom = GDS) or Advanced Level Examination (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung = ZOP) of the Goethe Institute
  • German Language Exam II of the Sprachen- und Dolmetscher-Institut München.

Students can take the required exams at the following places: Test-centres for TestDaF, Goethe-Institutes or some German Institutes of Higher Education. Please note that not all German universities offer DSH-Exams and that universities like RWTH Aachen University only grant admission to the test under certain conditions (see point III).

Students with Sufficient German Skills

If you have already passed the German University Language Test (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang - DSH) or an equivalent examination, you meet the linguistic requirements for the Master’sprogramme and will not have to pass further language tests.

Students with basic knowledge of German

For applicants with basic knowledge of German (Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache - ZDaF with the mark "befriedigend") RWTH Aachen offers an advanced German language course in the summer semester prior to the actual start of the respective Master’s programme. Applicants who intend to attend this course will have to apply by 15 January

Application Deadline

The general deadline for applications is March 1.

If you have a ZD-Certificate or TestDaF minimum level "3" in all areas and wish to participate in the advanced German language course (leading to DSH) prior to beginning the Master’s programme, please apply by 15 January.

Note

You should submit your application as early as possible since airmail can take up to four weeks and the visa up to eight weeks. Admitted applicants will receive a letter of response as soon as possible . Letters of admission/rejection will be send out in April/May at the earliest.
