Living in a Student Dorm
With prices ranging roughly from 180 to 400 Euros, rooms in the student dorms offer a more affordable alternative to the private housing market and are thus quickly filled. It is important that you apply as early as possible and are prepared for long waiting times. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee you will be allocated a room.
Rooms with Studierendenwerk Aachen
In Aachen there are many student dorms. Most of the dorms are operated by Studierendenwerk Aachen. You can find a complete overview of all the dorms, room categories, prices, and furnishings on the Studierendenwerk Aachen website.
Applying for a Room
International students, just like any other students, can apply online for a dorm room with Studierendenwerk Aachen. Please note that you should send your application as quickly as possible since waiting times can range on average from six months up to one year. This option is open to all (future) international students at RWTH Aachen, regardless if you are completing a degree here or just coming for an exchange. This procedure allows you to apply to a maximum of six specific student dorms.
Exclusive Offer for Exchange Students and Scholarship Holders: Room Allotments
If you are an exchange student as part of a partnership or an exchange program, you can also apply for so-called “quota rooms”. The International Office has arranged a limited allotment of rooms in the dorms with Studierendenwerk (226 rooms). If you are eligible for a quota room, the International Office Housing Service will inform you about the application procedure in a separate email (around April for winter term / December for summer term) after you have applied as an exchange student or scholarship holder. Please note that there is no guaranty you will be allocated a quota room, as the number of exchange students and scholarship holders exceeds by far the number of rooms reserved.
There is a separate housing portal for this allotment of rooms, where you can apply for max. four room types. Your application for quota rooms has no impact on your application at Studierendenwerk. Therefore make sure to apply in both portals in due times and to start looking on the private market early enough.
If you receive a room or studio offer from the reserved allotment, you can only rent the room for a maximum of two semesters. If you are going to be in Aachen for longer than year, make sure to find an alternative early on by either applying for a regular room in a dorm or looking on the private housing market.
Students in the following programs are eligible to apply:
- Exchange programs: ERASMUS+ study abroad, RWTH Exchange Worldwide, UNITECH, TGGS
- Double Master's Programs: T.I.M.E. Double Degree and Tsinghua Double Degree
- DAAD Scholarship Program IIT Master Sandwich
- Students in the Fast Track Bachelor Admission Program
- Students in our strategic partnerships with Tsinghua University and IIT Madras
Unfortunately Visiting Project Students, Erasmus trainees, Free Mover and regular international Bachelor's and Master's students cannot apply for a room in this special allotment.
If you are not sure whether you are eligible for a quota room or if you have general questions about the application procedure, the International Office Housing Advice Service will be happy to answer your questions.
Any questions about the Studierendenwerk application procedure should be addressed to the Studierendenwerk directly.
Aside from Studierendenwerk Aachen, the Evangelische Studierendengemeinde, ESG for short, and the Studentenwerk der Katholischen Hochschulgemeinde both offer dorm rooms. You can find application information on their respective websites. You can apply regardless of your ideology or religion.
There are also a few private student dorms in Aachen. You can find an overview of all (private, Studierendenwerk or student’s fraternities) student dorms in Aachen on this website. Please note that student’s fraternities (Studentenverbindung) offer very cheap accommodation but have a tradition of intensive social integration and are politically oriented.
The International Academy has opened a private student dorm with shared flats in the Frankenberger district of Aachen. For more information, do not hesitate to contact our Housing Service!
