Description

In today’s world, presenting well in English has become an essential international competence. When you present well in English, you will be able to communicate your expertise and interact effectively with your peers in the wider academic community.

Objective

  • Use effective opening and closing strategies: learn how to use the first and last minutes of your presentation to maximum effect

  • Structure your argument: learn how to guide the audience using signposts and transition signals

  • Use appropriate language: learn how to switch informal and formal language to match your presentation setting

  • Present visual information: learn how to comment on figures and charts

  • Use effective body language: learn how to use nonverbal language as a tool

  • Create a stronger argument: learn how to add emphasis to your argument using fronting, nominalizations and adverbials

  • Create rapport with the audience: learn how to engage your audience and make your argument lively and persuasive

  • Use your voice effectively: learn how to use stress, intonation and chunking

  • Handle Q&As: learn how to respond to different Q&A situations

Content

This 2-day workshop aims at supporting RWTH staff intending to develop different verbal and nonverbal skills relevant within an academic presentation setting. Over the course of two weeks, you will learn useful strategies and vocabulary for structuring your talk, presenting visuals and handling questions. Another primary focus will be the oral delivery of your presentation and your engagement with the audience. In this context, you will get an insight into how to build rapport with your listeners and learn strategies to develop a strong, interesting and convincing argument. By taking part in role plays and applying the gained knowledge in interactive ways, you will gain more confidence when speaking English in an academic presentation setting and improve your delivery in general.

Target Audience
