Description

This peer group coaching is offered for postdocs as a long-term support for their career path and the management of their daily work. A postdoc often embodies varying roles such as supervisor, teacher, researcher and networker. Managing these different roles while becoming clear of the next career step and putting everything in place to succeed seems a big task. This coaching supports postdocs to find solutions to their questions and to communication and leadership challenges through peer group discussion and coaching elements.

Participants are welcome to bring all their questions and challenges. The group focus will be determined by the needs of the individual participant.

Objective

The goal is

  • to support daily workflow

  • to manage team work and give supervision in an effective and dynamic way

  • to become clear on next career steps and future options

  • to get support in putting everything in place for a successful career in science

Methods

This coaching consists of both group discussions and artsbased processes. The latter is an approach of dealing with a question or a challenge through artful play, art making or improvisation. Research proves that cognitive understanding of a problem is not enough to change something. The person's emotions, values, expectations and belief systems play into the solution of a problem as well. These aspects can be worked at through creative, artsbased processes.

The benefit of enriching cognitive discussion with bodily improvisational experiences are mannifold: The challenge, which is often rooted in behavior and personality becomes tangible. That means, cognitive understanding is enriched with emotional intelligence. A solution that appears out of such a holistic coaching process is often new, creative and perfectly fitting the situation. The coachee's range of play and range of action widenes and expands. New tools become available.

Because leadership and communication call for individual strategies and solutions, artsbased coaching supports the coachee in discovering these tools on a very personal level. This coaching format supports the development of the individual professional role. Since processes are experience-based learning, the tranfer into daily life is instant. Examples for artsbased processes are visualisations, movement patterns, rhythmical und musical elements, theatre and poetry. No previous art experience is required. Rather an open mind and the willingness to try out something new is welcomed.
