Integration and Diversity

The topic "integration" is particulary important to the city of Aachen and RWTH Aache, the largest university in the city. Almost a third of Aachen's population has an immigration background.  With their abilities, language, culture, and vision, these people from numerous nations shape life in Aachen.  With their individual view of the city, the contribute to the diversity and development of Aachen.

Personal Impressions

In the framework of a collaborative project between different divisions, subjects, and departments of RWTH and the city of Aachen, 100 immigrants with varying cultures were showcased on posters at the center of the city in May 2011, around the future Centre Charlemagne.  With their own words they showed their attachment to the city.  This includes citizens of Aachen, university employees and students; all could be seen in the exhibit. The photos were from Birgit Deutschmann, Benno Helpenstein, Yannick Flaskamp, and Stefan Hense.  All four study at RWTH Aachen.

Successful Installment

Last year, the exhibit "Ansichten" showcased 120 students, apprentices, and employees of RWTH Aachen, graduates, and citizens of Aachen, displaying the different views of RWTH Aachen, that people in Aachen hold. The project has now been developed to focus on the internationality of the city and university.

Images - Faces of Aachen and RWTH Aachen

In collaborative project between RWTH Aachen and the city of Aachen, a total of 120 students, apprentices, and employees of RWTH Aachen, graduates, and citizens of Aachen, could be seen on posters around Aachen in the summer.

They and their personal statements about the university were presented at the SuperC, Kármán Forum, and on Augustinerplatz. The background of the project was universitas, as unity, and diversitas, as diversity of the perspective, with which people in Aachen view their university.

The exhibit was a mirror and reflection, and was in part an attempt to initiate a critical debate with RWTH Aachen.  Additionally, it provided a small wander through the university and city.
