ERS Project Support

From Idea to Research Center

For unconventional, high-risk ideas, a new type of project has been introduced - the so-called Speed Projects. The aim of such projects is to determine whether an idea might be technically feasible.

If the highly innovative ERS research idea yields evidence of potential that is also sustainable, future-oriented and of great scientific importance after initial testing, it will be supported specifically in the seed fund projects. This start-up financing has a duration of six to 12 months.

New Project Houses

Ideally, the seed fund projects develop into more comprehensive, interdisciplinary project proposals, that are funded by the RWTH Aachen "Boost Fund". These proposals create the foundation for the success of the so called project houses, whose activities serve to primarily build networks over the boundaries of involved disciplines.

In the meantime, efforts are made to develop the project houses further into research centers, which considerably contribute to sharpening RWTH Aachen's profile and visibility, and which are self-sufficient through external funding.

The ERS Process

ERS funded projects are initiated through two approaches. First there are the open calls: through a bottom up process, researchers can submit proposals for funding for all projects in RWTH research areas. These projects should aim at identifying and developing new interdisciplinary fields of research.

In contrast, the topic oriented calls are handled through a top down process: in agreement with the advising council, the rectorate funds projects in fields of research, which serve the the further development of strategically important research focuses at RWTH Aachen. As a result, profiile areas of the university that have already been established are outlined and further expanded.
