Faculty Profile

Library_425.jpgThe Faculty of Arts and Humanities was founded in 1965. Although its original focus was in the field of teacher training, its range of activity has since expanded significantly. Today the Faculty of Arts and Humanities comprises eleven institutes and departments offering subjects traditionally associated with the humanities and social sciences.

Both teaching and research in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at RWTH are characterized by their interdisciplinary outlook. To name an example, the HumTec Project House, which was established under the German Excellence Initiative, examines the ethical, legal and political implications of technological innovations as well as the cognitive, social, linguistic and cultural aspects of new technologies.

The humanities degree courses on offer at RWTH follow an interdisciplinary approach, in research as well as in teaching and learning. Thus students are invited to think beyond traditional discipline boundaries, and they gain insights on how disciplines relate to and influence each other. Whether they are pursuing a Bachelor's or a Master’s degree, our students typically have the opportunity to take two equally-weighted subjects, which enables them to develop their own particular skills sets and provides them with great flexibility in their careers.

The B.Sc. and M.Sc. programmes in technical communications, for instance, offers students the opportunity to study language and communication studies in combination with a subject in engineering or computer science. The Master's programme in European Studies prepares students for work in European institutions and underscores the key role of Aachen in fostering European integration. At the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, students can also study to become psychologists or teachers.

In view of the ever more complex global challenges confronting our societies today, young academics must develop the ability to conduct boundary-crossing conversations and research. It is this capability which an education at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at RWTH sets out to provide.
