RWTH celebrated its 150th anniversary under the motto of “Lernen. Forschen. Machen.” During its 150-year history, the University has not only demonstrated its strength in teaching, research, and innovation but also significantly contributed to the German higher education system. With such a wealth of experience under our belt, we decided to try switching roles – from player to the critical observer – and question the future viability of universities.

An ideal opportunity to delve into this question was our event “The New Fiction of Good Science – in Need of a Paradigm Shift?!”, which was offered as a live steam filmed from the NRW State Representation Building in Berlin on Thursday, May 6, 2021. It was originally scheduled to take place on March 11, 2020, but had to be canceled due to the advancing spread of coronavirus.

The critical topics of teaching, innovation, and third mission were discussed under the topics "University 4.0: Teaching and Learning in the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”. “Deep Tech, High Touch: The New University Innovation Ecosystem", and "University Mission (Impossible?): From Role Model to Supermodel".

The insights gained in the Science Evening in May will now be addressed in more depth in smaller expert panels in the new virtual series: The New Fiction of Good Science – Talking About....

Both Stiftung Mercator and Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. are kindly supporting the event.

The patron of the event was Armin Laschet, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia.
