With the atmosphere of an American graduation ceremony the open air event will be forever remembered. Parents, family, friends, and guests from politics and industry can watch from the stands as the graduates proceed into the auditorium by faculty. One particular highlight is the keynote speech, which will be given by astronaut Thomas Reiter, recipient of the 2016 Aachen Engineering Award. The program also includes performances, music, and conversations, and of course at the very end, the traditional cap toss.

The Minister of Innovatino, Science, and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia, Svenja Schulze, is expected among the thousands of guests. Schulze has attended the previous celebrations, raising a cheer from the audience in 2015, when she stated that "RWTH Aachen is a pearl in higher education." Studies at this university offer valuable knowledge and thus fantastic skills. "We need good scientists and we need a strong industry."
