Technologies for a Future Energy Grid

The goal of the Helmholtz Energy Alliance "Technologies for the Future Energy Grid" is to make the energy grid suitable for the strengthened used of renewalbe sources. The RWTH Aachen Institute for High Voltage Technology, IfHT for short, the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, ISEA, and the Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics, IAEW, are all involved in the research program coordinated by the Karlsruher Institute of Technology or KIT. Together with other universities and energy suppliers, the alliance is working on solutions for a flexible and solution electricity grid, that sustains the fluctuating supply of electricity from renewable energies. Other topics include the use of existing gas grids to save energy and the coupling of electricity and gas grids. The Helmholtz Association is funding the alliance in 2013 and 2014 with a total of 3.2 million euros.
