Waste and Wastewater in Indian Metropolises
Waste and wastewater in large Indian cities with over one million inhabitants are at the focus of a Summer School at the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology of RWTH Aachen University. The Summer School is hosted by the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, IGCS, a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IIT, RWTH, the TU0 universities, and Kiel University launched in 2010.
27 students from research institutions and universities in India and Germany are participating in the Summer School, titled “Sustainable Urban Water and Wastewater Management: India – Germany.” As part of the program, the state of the art in waste water management is being discussed in expert presentations. Furthermore, small groups of participants work on projects such as “Application of Sustainable Urban Drainage System Tools to Green Campuses”.
Apart from ten researchers from Aachen, Köln and Stuttgart contributing to the summer school, four professors from IIT Madras and IIT Rourkee hosted by the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology headed by Professor Rafig Azzam, are contributing to the program.
In addition, researchers from RWTH’s Research Institute for Water and Waste Management are offering workshops such as “Interactive Waste Water Training“ and a site visit to the public utility company Stadtwerke Köln.
The Summer School receives funding from the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, IGCS, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The Center seeks to initiate and strengthen collaborations between Indian and German Scientists. Furthermore, the Center provides vocational training and continuing education in the area of sustainable development. Key research areas include sustainable energies, water and waste management, land use, and urban development.
