As part of the ”Dentists Under National Soialism“ research project, a conference titled “Dentists and the Profession of Dentistry Under National Socialism" will take place between June 8 and 9, 2017, in Aachen.

Aside from national and international researchers, representatives from the German Dental Association BZÄK, the German Society of Dentistry and Oral Medicine DGZMK, and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists KZBV will attend the conference.

On June 8, starting at 7pm, Dr. Roman Töppel from the Institute of Contemporary History IfZ will give a talk on “Hitler's ‘Mein Kampf’ – A Critical Edition.” A team of historians, including Dr. Roman Töppel, prepared this edition, which includes extensive critical comments and was published in 2016, over a period of several years.

Since the autumn of 2016, Professor Dominik Groß from the RWTH Institute of the History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine has been collaborating with his colleagues Dr. Matthis Krischel, University of Düsseldorf, and Enno Schwanke, RWTH, in a research project concerned with dentists and the profession of dentistry under National Socialism.

The project, which receives funding from BZÄK, DGZMK, and KZBV, investigates both medical perpetrators and their victims as well as the resistance of dentists against the regime. It seeks systematically to analyze the politics and policies of scientists and of medical representative bodies during the Third Reich as well as in the preceding and subsequent years.

“Medicine under Socialism” is one of the key research topics of the Aachen Institute of the History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine. Over the past years, the Institute has succeeded in acquiring external funding for several projects within this research area. Moreover, the Aachen Institute publishes a book series on the topic of “Medicine and National Socialism.”
