RWTH and Tsinghua University Expand Cooperation
A delegation from Tsinghua University in Beijing just visited RWTH. Both universities have been cooperating since 1981 and are now looking to expand their collaboration. The idea is for research approaches to be pooled together and further activities made possible, in the form of a graduate school for example.
During the visit, RWTH Rector Ulrich Rüdiger and Professor Bin Yang, vice-president of Tsinghua University, signed a contract to continue and expand the Double Degree Master course of study, which has been running since 2001. In this course, Master students of mechanical engineering pursue their studies at the respective partner university for two semesters and graduate with a Master degree from both universities once they have completed the program. To date, 800 students have taken advantage of this opportunity. In future, a total of 120 placements will be offered each year.
Another important feature of the visit was a ceremony marking 108 years since Tsinghua University was founded. The number 108 is considered a holy number in many countries in Asia, including China. The ceremony was organized by the German alumni association in Aachen. Former RWTH Rector Burkhard Rauhut and Professor Reinhart Poprawe, Rector’s Delegate for China, attended the event.
