KI-Based Application to Warn Drivers of Heavy Rainfalls

04/11/2021

The project receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

On November 1, 2021, the project “IRSV – Intelligent Heavy Rain-Related Flood Risk Warning for the Transportation Sector” – commenced its activities. Until 2024, RWTH’s Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management (IWW), KISTERS AG, 4traffic, and SCHWIETERING Ingenieure GmbH are seeking to develop a real-time heavy-rain forecasting system for the transport sector.

With the help of AI technology, precipitation forecasts are to be enhanced by locally accurate flood warnings and, ultimately, made available to navigation devices. This would make it possible to divert traffic flows in good time in case of a heavy rainfall event, taking into account current water levels, flow velocities, and traffic infrastructures.

The project receives funding of around 500,000 euros from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure’s the Modernization Fund ("mFUND").
