The Discourse of German Unity
On November 24, RWTH Aachen will host a guest lecture on the 25-year history of East-West discourse in unified Germany.
25 years ago, these photos went around the world: people embracing each other in the streets, crying for joy, celebrating the reunification of Germany. But how is this momentous event perceived by youths in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion today? What does it mean for young people in the region that the historical sites of reunification are far away, while the process of European integration feels quite close? These questions are at the focus of this international get-together of Belgian, Dutch, and German students and lecturers.
On the occasion of the conference, the Teaching and Research Area “Pedagogy of the Social Sciences” will host a guest lecture on the 25-year history of the East-West discourse, titled “Herr Lehmann blickt nach Osten. 25 Jahre Geschichte des Ost-West-Diskurses im geeinten Deutschland.”
The lecture, given by Steffen Pappert from the University of Duisburg-Essen and Kersten Sven Roth from Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, investigates whether today’s discourse on unified Germany is still marked by a perceived rift between East and West or whether there is an (over)emphasis on a common ground and mutual appreciation.
