New Stimuli For Science

25/09/2015

RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich bundle together their skills in the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance or JARA, to conduct top quality research in selected fields. The simulation sciences and high performance computing, HPC for short, are significant components of the scientific work at JARA. Within the framework of the fourth JARA FORUM on Thursday, October 1, 2015, in Berlin, researchers from JARA-HPC will offer a look at the application possibilities and concepts of computer simulations and high performance parallel computing. The keynote address will be given by Andreas von Bechtolsheim, a pioneer in computer science, founder of Sun-Microsystems, and one of the first investors in Google.

Under the title "Simulation and Data Analysis - Bridges Over the Borders of Knowledge" researchers show the NRW state representation in Berlin why simulations are an important motor in research today: They can replace experiments that are no longer possible due to physical, technical, or ethical reasons, and they help to evaluate and visualize the most complex theories and models.

Computer simulations help to significantly advance brain research. JARA-HPC has the highest performing computing system in Europe with the Jülich supercomputers JUQUEEN and JERECA as well as the RWTH Compute Cluster. Specialists in JARA-HPC have created simulations that offer a look into the working brain. Questions, like how the exchange of information between nerve cells happens and how dieases restrict this exchange, can be answered in the future with visualizations from these simulations.

The components that determine our weather and environment on Earth are highly compley. Experts and JARA-HPC aim at creating a description, which takes all the components of the terrestrial system like groundwater, land surface, and atmosphere, into consideration. Theory and practive reach their limits here. These limits are pushed and moved through simulation and high peformance parallel computing.

New JARA-HPC Research Project

The engineering sciences particularly profit from simulations. One new research project in JARA-HPC is focusing on the injection process of fluid fuels. Simulation researchers are simulating the entire process on high performance computers in order to optimize combustion engines' performance and their emission levels. Future combustion engines are expected to have high performance and a lower level of emissions.

What is JARA?

The Jülich Aachen Research Alliance, JARA for short, is a collaborative model unique in Germany and made up of RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich. It overcomes the coexistence of university and non-university research and teacher in order to address compley questions with unified resarch skills and capacity. in JARA, RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich combine research fields, where they supplement each other's own specific strengths and create a worldclass research environment with the motto "Combining Skills, Shaping the Future."
