Joint Summer School at Stanford University
RWTH students in the engineering and social sciences participated in the Summer School "Expanding Engineering Limits: Culture, Diversity and Gender," which took place at Stanford University between September 26 and 29.
The summer school was jointly organized by the Professorship for Gender and Diversity in Engineering (GDI) the RWTH Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, d-school for short, at Stanford University, California, USA.
The Summer School gave students from both universities the opportunity to gain insights into the relationships between gender and diversity perspectives and the engineering sciences, in particular into the interaction between society, culture, and technological developments.
Furthermore, they were familiarized with “Design Thinking,” an approach that seeks to generate holistic, user-oriented solutions to complex problems in creative teamwork. A follow-up course at RWTH Aachen is to deepen the learning experience of the participating students.
The Summer School was jointly hosted by Professor Sheri D. Sheppard of the Design Group of Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University; Professor Carmen Leicht-Scholten, GDI, RWTH Aachen University; Shannon K. Gilmartin, Ph.D., School of Engineering, Stanford University; and Carol B. Muller, Stanford WISE Ventures.
