Vocation Description

During your training to become a book binder, you will learn the various sides of this profession. RWTH Aachen offers the elective qualifications "Repair of Books and Objects," "Designing Book Binding Products," and "Unique and Batch Production."
You will advise customers on the materials and techniques available. In order to make unique books or produce them in small series, book binders specializing in single and special production, cut sheets of paper, fold, join, glue, or bind them with a machine or by hand. Using leather, tissue, hand finished marbled paper, or other similar fine materials, they create book covers and produce embossed or stamped editions, and do repairs or decorations such as gold-block. Depending on the product, handwork is sought out as much as machine operation.

Standard services include binding periodicals or journals for libraries, doctors, lawyers, tax advisors, and Diplom theses and exam papers. Book binders also produce guestbooks, photo albums, boxes and boxed sets according to specific measurements, using materials chosen by the customer.

Practical Training

Practical training takes places at the RWTH Faculty of Architecture.

School Training
