Successful research must be professionally managed. The increasing relevance of external funding and the growing importance of strategic processes and collaborations require excellently trained experts in research, development, and management. These experts must be able to lead challenging research projects in interdisciplinary teams based in Germany and abroad.

Working at the interface of research and business not only demands a comprehensive understanding of the big picture, but also an integrative combination of expertise and application competency.

The RWTH Research Manager in-service continuing education program for academic staff at the University takes this development into account. The program teaches professional skills in the areas of research and external funding management, technology transfer, marketing and research cooperation, and self-development. The combination of lectures and group work is complemented with a practical transfer project. In addition, participants and lecturers network and share their experience with each other as an integral part of promoting excellent research in interdisciplinary teams.

The program structure includes the following modules as well as the preparation of an accompanying transfer project:

  • Module 1: Fundamentals of research management
  • Module 2: Research partnerships and marketing
  • Transfer Project Part I: Interim presentation & discussion of the transfer tasks
  • Module 3: Research funding and controlling
  • Module 4: Technology transfer and entrepreneurship
  • Module 5: Self-development
  • Transfer Project Part II: Final presentation & final discussion of the transfer tasks

The RWTH Research Manager course creates a special qualification profile for the participants, who will learn new methods and instruments for managing projects, people, and processes in an efficient and effective manner. They will enhance their understanding of strategic research planning and develop a new self-image as a research manager.
