Division 12.1 - Early-Career Researcher Development and Talent Management

The Division of Early-Career Researcher Development and Talent Management belongs to the Department of Staff Development and Talent Management in RWTH Aachen Central University Administration. The division supports scientists with their career development.


Our Services – Promotion of Junior Researchers and Career and Management Development

We offer programs and individual advising and coaching services for different groups. Our goal is to support doctoral candidates, post docs, junior researchers, and professors in developing their skills and abilities and to use them to shape the future. Our services are bundled into different competence centers and programs:


Center for Doctoral Studies

The Center for Doctoral Studies, CDS for short, is the central office for extracurricular qualifications for doctoral candidates. The CDS offers all doctoral candidates a comprehensive seminar program for expanding their transferable skills. As proof of all achieved qualifications during your doctoral studies, the CDS issues a doctorate supplement, that is given to to doctoral graduates with their doctorate diploma. The CDS is advised and supported by a scientific advisory council.

Center for Professional Leadership

The Center for Professional Leadership, CPL for short, offers programs for various target groups and faculty at different career stages. We support skills development in a number of career-relevant areas of competence.

We support junior researchers and our science managers in expanding their management and leadership skills and in the development of their careers and personal skills. Our offers include workshops for post docs and science managers, certificate courses for academic leaders, and coaching formats.

The CPL also houses the offices of the AixCYR – Aachen Center for Young Researchers, the self-administrated network for young researchers at RWTH Aachen with doctoral degrees.

Individual Mentoring and Coaching for Advanced Talents is an offer for junior professors and for junior research group leaders and post docs with honors and scholarships. We assist them in their career development and with attaining thier individual goals.

We welcome professors to RWTH Aachen with an onboarding service for professors. We offer workshops for professors to further develop their management and leadership skills – regardless if they are newly appointed or experienced professors – and coaching formats specifically tailored to the needs of this target group.

Career Advising for Researchers

The development of your own career is extremely important no matter what phase of your academic career you are in. Aside from targeted career advising and mentoring from superiors the RWTH Aachen Division of Career Development offers its researchers an individual conversation to orient themselves in their personal career development.


Support for Research Networks

Research Networks such as Collaborative Research Centers (SFB) and Graduate Research Training Groups (GRK) play a key role in the collaboration within scientific institutions. The Division of Career Development offers the following support programs for SFB and GRK:

Qualification in Research Networks is a joint program between the Exploratory Research Space (ERS) and the Center for Doctoral Studies (CDS). The objective is to support and develop interdisciplinary research within and between SFBs by offering exclusive qualification programs for doctoral candidates and postdocs.

In close collaboration with the Rector's Office Staff Unit Integration Team – Human Resources, Gender and Diversity Management, IGaD for short – we support research networks in promoting equality between men and women in the scientific and academic communities. Gender Consulting – or more specifically the advising offers regarding strategies and implementation of equal opportunity measures – is the responsibility of IGaD; while Division 12.1 – Career Development is responsible for putting the above measures in place as well as for accomplishing the finance controlling that is associated with it.


Further Education for Personnel

You are also in the right spot for matters concerning further education for personnel. We offer courses and seminars on a variety of topics in a continuously updated further education program online. This service also exists for individual needs outside of our set program.
