Visiting RWTH and Getting Around

Since the introduction of the Semester Ticket for students and the Job Ticket for employees of RWTH, the alternative means of transportation to cars have become increasingly diverse. The University is always ready to break new ground and supports this with its contracts with providers of alternative means of transportation.

Different Transportation Options

By Bus and Train

The nearest train station to RWTH is Aachen West. Both RWTH's central campus, with the Main Building on Templergraben, and Campus Hörn are within walking distance. However, there are also bus lines too. Campus Melaten and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen are just a short bus ride away, with the journey a mere six to ten minutes in total.

Aachen Central Station and RWTH are connected via many different bus lines. The bus ride to all campuses lasts about 20 minutes. RWTH's offices in the Burtscheid area of the City and at Theaterplatz are within walking distance from Aachen Central Station.

For Those Whose Driver's License Was Not Issued in Germany

Before you drive in Germany, you should find out whether your driver's license is valid in Germany. The traffic regulations in Germany that you will need to follow have been very well summarized by the ADAC.
If you want to drive your own car in Germany, you must register your vehicle at the nearest Road Traffic Office to your place of residence. Contact this office to find out which documents you have to bring. In any case, you will have to provide proof of ownership and insurance for your car. Your vehicle must also undergo an inspection at an authorized car repair shop to prove that it meets German safety and emission standards. You will then receive a sticker for your license plate. For further information on this, please visit the websites of TÜV NORD and DEKRA.

You will need to get a parking permit to be allowed to park your car in a university parking lot.

By Bike

The City of Aachen is gradually improving the cycling infrastructure around the University in order to create the best possible conditions for cyclists. You will find a good number of bike racks at almost all RWTH institutions, so you can safely lock your bike.

The University is working to further expand and improve the options available.

Please see the City of Aachen's offerings for cyclists to get a general overview.

By E-Scooter

E-scooters have been allowed on German roads since 2019. E-scooters are a quiet and environmentally-friendly alternative to cars and buses. Users can move quickly and comfortably within the city while avoiding traffic jams or waiting for buses.

Please observe the rules and legal requirements when using e-scooters!
